Summery forest festival in the middle of the Palatinate Forest on the Altenberg
Wernersberg is located at an altitude of around 380 meters in the middle of the Palatinate Forest, the largest contiguous forest area in Germany. The state-recognized climatic health resort belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Annweiler am Trifels and is surrounded by sandstone rocks, sandstone quarries, and extensive forest areas that extend south to the Dahner Felsenland region.
The Altenberg is a hill above the village, which is a popular hiking and excursion destination with a developed festival area and a shelter. On normal days, the area is used by hikers; on festival days, it becomes a small but atmospheric festival island in the forest with a festival tent, bar, and barbecue station. Its location on the Palatinate hiking trail network makes the ascent to the festival an easy hike.
The culinary offerings focus on what suits a classic Palatinate forest festival: grilled bratwurst and steak, Schwenkbraten (marinated pork neck), fries, Pfälzer Saumagen (pork belly terrine), accompanied by Schorle (mixed wine and soda water), draft beer, and wine from the Southern Wine Route vineyards. Tables and benches are set up outdoors, allowing guests to experience the forest ambiance directly.
Unlike the large city festivals in the region, the Waldfest on the Altenberg is a typical club or local festival. It is organized and financed independently by the local community of Wernersberg together with local clubs. The manageable scale is part of its charm: guests and organizers know each other, and conversations at the beer tables are often the real program.
The festival traditionally falls on a summer holiday or a weekend when many hikers are out and about in the Palatinate Forest. The combination of a short climb from Wernersberg to the Altenberg and the view over the low mountain range makes the festival grounds accessible even for families.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Wernersberg local authority in the spring. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years.
