Traditional Easter bonfire on the North Sea dike — Easter Saturday with bratwurst and music
The Osterfeuer (Easter bonfire) is one of North Germany's oldest spring traditions. Originally, the large bonfire on Easter Saturday symbolized the expulsion of winter and the welcome of spring — to this day, large piles of wood are stacked and lit in the evening in almost every North German coastal town. In Büsumer Deichhausen, the small neighboring village of Büsum directly on the North Sea mudflats, the Easter bonfire is one of the communal highlights of spring.
For several years, the Easter bonfire has taken place at the end of Breksweg (formerly Pferdeweide) — no longer behind the dike as it used to be, but on a fire site with better safety clearance. The schedule for 2026:
Free entry. The organizer is the Tourismusverein Büsumer Deichhausen e.V.
By the fire, there's classic catering: bratwurst, rolls, beer, mulled wine for cold evenings, non-alcoholic drinks. A band or DJ provides musical accompaniment. The atmosphere is familial: locals, regular guests, and holidaymakers stand together around the fire, chat, and warm themselves. If the wind is favorable, you can see the North Sea mudflats dike from the fire site — a backdrop that only the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein offers.
The municipality of Büsumer Deichhausen is located in the Dithmarschen district, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, directly northwest of the North Sea spa town of Büsum. With just over 1,000 inhabitants, it is significantly quieter than its neighboring town and caters to holidaymakers seeking the mudflats experience in a relaxed setting. The Tourismusverein Büsumer Deichhausen e.V. organizes the Easter bonfire as one of the first events of the summer season — the start of spring in the annual program.
The 2026 edition continues the centuries-old North German tradition of the Easter bonfire — as a communal start to spring on the North Sea mudflats. As in previous years, the event is free to attend; food and drinks are offered on-site at popular prices.
The fire site is located at the end of Breksweg (former location "Pferdeweide"). For safety reasons, parking is not permitted on Breksweg itself; the official parking areas are located under the dike at Achtern Diek, from where it is a few minutes' walk to the fire site.
Bratwurst, rolls, draft beer, wine, mulled wine for cold evenings, non-alcoholic drinks. Prices as usual for the association.
By car: B203 or B5 towards Büsum, then to Büsumer Deichhausen. Free parking under the dike at Achtern Diek. Parking is not possible on Breksweg itself. By train: Büsum main station (from Heide), then bus or taxi (approx. 10 minutes).
Free.
Saturday, April 4, 2026, from 6:00 PM. Lighting of the fire around 7:30 PM.
Bring warm clothing — even though the fire provides warmth, the North Sea wind in April is still cold. A short walk on the dike before the fire is classic.
