Open-Air rock by the dike with a view of the Wadden Sea
„Rock hinterm Deich" is the unusually relaxed open-air concert at the SpeelKoog in Büsumer Deichhausen — a festival meadow directly behind the Wadden Sea dike, with old trees and an unobstructed view of the mudflats at low tide. The SpeelKoog is actually the village's children's playground; once a year, it becomes a stage. The organizer is the Tourismusverein Büsumer Deichhausen e.V. Admission is free.
The program changes annually. The concerts are not festival-loud, but rather family-friendly — rock and Schlager classics, cover bands, and occasionally original material are played. In past seasons, Crank It Up, the Kings of Cringe (St. Pauli stage trio), and other North German bands have performed on stage, among others. The atmosphere is cozy and North German, with beer, bratwurst, and lemonade available on the sidelines, and children running across the meadow while parents sit in folding chairs in front of the stage.
What makes the location unique is its setting: right on the Wadden Sea, with the dike serving as a natural acoustic wall and the mudflats as a backdrop. At sunset, the atmosphere becomes magical — many visitors take a walk on the dike before the concert to watch the sunset over the mudflats. Performances typically run from around 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
The municipality of Büsumer Deichhausen in the Dithmarschen district, state of Schleswig-Holstein, is located directly northwest of the North Sea spa town of Büsum. With just over 1,000 inhabitants, it is significantly smaller and quieter than its neighboring town and caters to holidaymakers seeking a relaxed Wadden Sea atmosphere. "Rock hinterm Deich" is a communal highlight in the summer, bringing locals and guests together.
The 2026 edition brings the Kings of Cringe to the stage — a trio that normally performs on Hamburg's St. Pauli stages. The band plays rock and pop songs from the last 20 years in their own cover versions, with casual humor and appropriate stage references to Hamburg's Kiez repertoire.
The concert starts at 6:00 PM and ends around 11:00 PM. The catering at the SpeelKoog opens even earlier — bring folding chairs or blankets, as the area has limited seating.
