The most beautiful industrial monument in the world
The UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein in Essen is one of the most significant industrial monuments worldwide — and a central site of the Ruhr area. Shaft XII (built in 1932 by architects Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer) is considered the "most beautiful mine in the world". In 2001, the site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list, along with the neighboring Zollverein coking plant. Today, the area houses the Ruhr Museum, the Red Dot Design Museum, a dance academy, designer studios, and event spaces.
The nationwide UNESCO World Heritage Day
The UNESCO World Heritage Day is a nationwide day of action on which all UNESCO World Heritage sites in Germany offer special, often free programs. In 2026, World Heritage Day falls on Sunday, June 7, 2026. Zollverein also participates with a rich day program.
Program Highlights
The exact program will be published by the Zollverein Foundation in spring 2026. Typically expected:
- Free guided tours of the World Heritage site — Shaft XII, Coal Washery, Hall 12
- Special guided tours on the Monument Trail ("About Coal and Miners" — history of coal mining)
- Family programs at the Ruhr Museum and on the grounds — quiz rallies, craft stations, hands-on workshops
- Open areas that are normally not accessible
- Activities related to industrial culture — blacksmithing, miner's language, former miners as contemporary witnesses
- Concerts and readings on the grounds
The Site Today
The former Zollverein coal mine was closed in 1986 — as the last mine in the region, Shaft XII no longer extracted coal underground. Since then, the area has been culturally repurposed in several renovation phases:
- Ruhr Museum — Regional museum in the former Coal Washery
- Red Dot Design Museum — award-winning design collection
- PACT Zollverein — Performing Arts Center
- Zollverein Pool in summer, Ice Rink in winter
- Factory swimming pool, restaurants, buildings by Sanaa and OMA
Essen and the Ruhr Area
Essen, with almost 600,000 inhabitants, is one of the core cities of the Ruhr area. The city reinvented its identity with the end of coal mining in 1986 — from an industrial location to a center for culture, education, and services. Zollverein is a symbol of this structural change: a once purely industrial site, now one of the most important cultural areas in Europe and the main venue for the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010.
World Heritage Sites in NRW
With Zollverein, Aachen Cathedral, Cologne Cathedral, Augustusburg Castle in Brühl, the Collegiate Church in Corvey, and the Lower Germanic Limes, North Rhine-Westphalia is rich in UNESCO World Heritage sites. World Heritage Day makes this treasure tangible — free for everyone.
