About Stone Techno

Stone Techno transforms the industrial cathedrals of Essen's Zollverein colliery into a pulsating world of concrete, steel, and bass every summer. Over a hundred international acts play on the UNESCO World Heritage site between the mixing plant, Grand Hall, and the new circular amphitheater — Techno, House, Ambient, and Experimental between deep shafts and conveyor belts. The open-air program thunders during the day, and at night it continues in the former coking plant halls. One of Germany's most unique festival backdrops, in the heart of the Ruhr area.

Stone Techno — Techno in a place that made industrial history

Looking for techno in a setting that pulsates itself? Then there's no way around Essen in the summer. At the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein colliery, once the largest and most modern hard coal mine in the world, North Rhine-Westphalia dances for three days through a festival that creates a tension between industrial history and electronic present like hardly any other festival in Germany. Stone Techno was founded in 2022 — as an extension of Boiler Room's Stone Techno mini-series — and has established itself as a fixture on the international techno calendar within a few years.

The Stages — Mixing Plant, Grand Hall, and the New Amphitheater

The festival uses the architecture of Zollverein as its stage design. The main floor is located in the former mixing plant of the coking plant — concrete, raw steel beams, cold industrial charm. The Grand Hall is the nocturnal heart: darker, denser, harder. In 2026, a newly designed circular amphitheater will be added, hosting performances for the first time, including a fifth stage for Ambient and experimental music — a meditative counterpart to the energetic main areas.

International Ambition, Clear Curation

Over 100 artists from the contemporary electronic scene are brought together in the annual edition. The curatorial signature clearly separates Stone Techno from any random Ruhrpott rave: Six curators are responsible for one floor each, and exclusive 12-inch vinyl editions are released, keeping the festival present in the scene far beyond the weekend. Past editions are documented on arte CONCERT.

Open Air During the Day, Indoors at Night

The day program runs from 12 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. outdoors, and the night program opens at 11 p.m. in the enclosed halls, ending at 7 a.m. Those with a Full Weekender Day Ticket can switch between areas continuously. The Werkschwimmbad pool is open until 9 p.m. — a peculiarity that simply belongs to the World Heritage industrial backdrop.

World Heritage Zollverein — Backdrop and District

The Zollverein colliery is located in the north of Essen, in the Stoppenberg district, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001. On the site, the coking plant, Shaft XII, and the rail network combine to form one of Europe's most important industrial monuments. The fact that one of the continent's most renowned techno festivals takes place here today is more than just a choice of location — it's the program.

18+, Cashless, Accessible

Stone Techno is an 18+ festival, payment is cashless (card or PayPal), and a deposit system supports youth programs. The event is accessible, with an awareness team and medical staff on site. Its own tram line (107) connects the site with Essen's city center — free parking is available on the World Heritage site.

District and State

Essen is an independent city in the administrative district of Düsseldorf, in the middle of the Ruhr area, North Rhine-Westphalia. Stone Techno is one of the region's three major electronic summer festivals, alongside Time Warp (Mannheim) and Mayday (Dortmund), and is considered by far the most culturally ambitious of the three.

Stone Techno — edition 2026

The fifth edition of Stone Techno will take place from July 10 to 12, 2026, at the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein in Essen. More than 120 international acts, a newly designed circular amphitheater, and a fifth stage for Ambient and experimental music — the festival further expands its position as one of Europe's most ambitious techno events.

From July 10 to 12, 2026, the Zollverein World Heritage site will once again open its gates for three days and nights of techno. The mixing plant, the Grand Hall, and the new amphitheater host a program ranging from classic Industrial Techno, House, Ambient, and experimental electronics. Day program from 12 p.m. to 11:59 p.m., night program from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

With acts like DVS1, Magda, Rødhåd, Oscar Mulero, and Function, the 2026 festival once again features techno heavyweights, complemented by internationally emerging talents and six floor curators with their own vinyl releases. Tickets are available as Full Weekender, Day, or Night passes.
