District festival on July 4th and 5th, 2026 in the Heßler allotment garden complex — Theme IGA 2027, free admission
Gelsenkirchen launched a new event format in 2025: the district festivals in five allotment garden complexes. Instead of one large city center event, the city distributes one decentralized neighborhood festival per district across a local allotment garden complex — thereby placing garden culture at the center. Background: the International Garden Exhibition IGA 2027, taking place in the Ruhr metropolitan region, for which Gelsenkirchen is one of the central locations.
Mitte is the urban heart of Gelsenkirchen — main train station, Bahnhofstraße, Heinrich-König-Platz, Konzerthaus, City Hall. In the western part of the district lies the Heßler neighborhood, characterized by apartment buildings, smaller commercial structures, and precisely the allotment garden complex where the district festival takes place: the KGV Heßler allotment garden association at Aldenhofstraße 100.
The second Bezirksfest Mitte will take place on the first weekend of July 2026:
Best time to visit for families: Sunday morning to afternoon with nature education activities. Best time to visit for adults: Saturday evening with the club stage and a cozy open-air atmosphere in the garden.
The program focuses on garden and nature themes, thus contributing to the IGA 2027 preparations:
Staff from the IGA 2027 project group will present the planned Gelsenkirchen IGA locations — Nordsternpark, Halde Rheinelbe, Rungenberg-Halde. Information brochures and advance visualizations will give visitors a taste of the major event.
The Gelsenkirchen City Energy Advice service will provide on-site consultations on energy efficiency for houses and apartments, solar systems, heat pumps, and funding programs. A win-win combination of garden and climate themes.
Local clubs will perform on the open-air stage — dance groups, carnival clubs, sports clubs, and music ensembles from the Mitte district are invited. Clubs wishing to participate can contact [email protected]. According to the city's announcement: “We want to give dance groups, carnival clubs, or sports clubs the opportunity to present themselves.”
Food and drinks will be offered by the KGV Heßler allotment gardeners and external snack vendors — bratwurst, fries, cake, lemonade, beer, wine, non-alcoholic drinks. The atmosphere will be like a classic club festival, with beer tables under apple trees.
The Bezirksfest Mitte is one of five parallel events taking place between May and September 2026 in all Gelsenkirchen districts — each in an allotment garden complex:
Each festival follows the same concept: garden setting, IGA 2027 connection, nature education family program, local club stage, free admission.
