Biennale of Free Arts — 24 Hours Non-Stop in Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf
The Szeniale is one of the most extraordinary festival formats in North Rhine-Westphalia: a 24-hour festival of free arts — from the morning of September 25th to the morning of September 26th, 2026. The organizer is the Förderverein Szeniale e.V., which organizes the festival as a biennale (every two years).
The motto of the 2026 edition is programmatic: "What are we still waiting for?" — understood as a wake-up call in a time when waiting seems to have become the societal agenda. Climate crisis, geopolitical tensions, social division: the festival seeks artistic answers and statements.
The venue is the Kreativ.Quartier Ückendorf: a district of Gelsenkirchen that has become a dense network of studios, collective spaces, bars, squares, and initiatives over the past few years. During the Szeniale, streets, squares, studios, backyards, and public buildings become stages — the entire neighborhood is a festival space.
The Szeniale sees itself as a festival that transcends traditional genre divisions. Expected disciplines include:
At the last edition in 2024, around 86 performances by approximately 100 artists were presented at 30 venues. Similar scales are expected for 2026. The open call runs regularly a few months before the festival — artists from all disciplines can submit contributions that address the motto.
The Szeniale clearly positions itself against discrimination and extremism of any kind. It sees itself as a platform for artistic participation and community engagement. Admission is free — funded by the city, the state of NRW, and sponsorships.
Gelsenkirchen is an independent city in the Ruhr Area, North Rhine-Westphalia, traditionally a coal and steel city, today the scene of profound structural change. The Kreativ.Quartier Ückendorf is one of the densest creative industry quarters in the Ruhr Area — and the Szeniale is its largest cultural event.
The 2026 biennale edition follows the established concept of a 24-hour staging throughout the Ückendorf district. The open call runs in spring; the final program will be published in summer. A directory of stages, artists, and venues will be available via szeniale.ruhr and visit.gelsenkirchen.de.
Note: The final festival schedule with artists, times, and venues will be published via szeniale.ruhr and the Kreativ.Quartier Ückendorf before the festival.
Free admission. Food and drinks available on-site (bars and stands in the quarter).
