A Spanish Weekend in the Ruhr Area
The GEspaña – The Flamenco Festival is the annual Spanish fiesta in Gelsenkirchen's city center – now in its 9th edition. The organizer is the City Initiative Gelsenkirchen e.V. in cooperation with the city and tourist information. The concept is simple and strong: for three days, Spanish sounds, scents, and colors transform Gelsenkirchen's city center into an Andalusian pedestrian zone.
Dates 2026 – May 29th to 31st
In 2026, GEspaña runs from Friday, May 29th to Sunday, May 31st. Sunday traditionally coincides with a Sunday shopping event at Gelsenkirchen's stores, linking the festival with city center shopping.
Four Squares, Two Stages
The festival mile stretches across four central locations in Gelsenkirchen's city center:
- Heinrich-König-Platz – one of the central squares, main stage location
- Neumarkt – second main stage (Sparkassen stage)
- Bahnhofstraße – gastronomy mile with tapas bars
- Bahnhofsvorplatz – family area and children's wonderland
The two Sparkassen stages on Heinrich-König-Platz and Neumarkt offer continuous music programming: Flamenco ensembles, Latin Pop, Spanish folk, Sevillanas, occasional Rumba, and Salsa. The program is deliberately broad to appeal to both Flamenco purists and a mainstream audience.
Spanish Gastronomy
The culinary aspect is one of the festival's main attractions: Tapas bars, paella stands, pinchos, churros, sangria, Tinto de Verano, Cava, and of course, Spanish wine. During these three days, the city is decorated with Spanish flags, red and yellow pennants, and temporary tapas counters – a deliberate Andalusian atmosphere in the heart of the Ruhr area.
Children's Wonderland
In the family area at Bahnhofsvorplatz, a children's wonderland is set up with carousels, bouncy castles, craft and play stations, costumed animation characters, and ice cream carts. An important draw for families visiting the festival on the weekend.
Sunday Shopping
On Sunday, May 31st, 2026, a Sunday shopping event for Gelsenkirchen's city center stores will run parallel to the festival – an additional incentive for day visitors from the Ruhr area and Münsterland.
Gelsenkirchen – A City in Transition
With GEspaña, Gelsenkirchen consciously positions itself as a vibrant city center brand. After years of economic challenges, the city and the City Initiative are determined to give the city center new appeal with major cultural events. GEspaña is one of the most successful formats in this strategy.
