13th edition of the charity fun run by the Gelsenkirchen Police on August 5, 2026 — open to all, for the benefit of Kindertafel and Emmaus Hospice
The Blaulichtlauf Gelsenkirchen is an unusual initiative: the Gelsenkirchen Police itself organizes a charity fun run — explicitly open to the public. The idea: to strengthen trust between the police and citizens while collecting money for needy initiatives in Gelsenkirchen. On August 5, 2026, the 13th edition will take place — a remarkable tradition that has mobilized thousands of runners over the years.
All proceeds from the run (registration fees, donations, sponsorship) go to social projects in Gelsenkirchen. In 2025, these were the Kindertafel Gelsenkirchen (providing warm meals for needy children) and the Emmaus-Hospiz (hospice for the terminally ill). The beneficiaries are determined annually by the Police Department.
The Blaulichtlauf is not an internal police run but is explicitly open to everyone:
As with most fun runs, there are various distances:
Exact distances will be announced with the course approval in early March 2026.
The Blaulichtlauf is part of a broader initiative by the Gelsenkirchen Police to foster trust and closeness with the public. In a city with complex social conditions (migration, structural change, industrial heritage), this dialogue is important. Other initiatives include school visits, sports programs, and neighborhood consultation hours.
The run brings together various emergency service organizations — police, fire department, ambulance service, THW (Technical Relief Agency). This solidarity in uniforms is part of the festival's identity.
Gelsenkirchen in the Ruhr area (North Rhine-Westphalia) has about 260,000 inhabitants and is shaped by its coal and steel industry heritage. In the last two decades, the city has developed into a city of sports and culture — with FC Schalke 04 as a pillar of its football identity and an active fun run scene. The Blaulichtlauf is among the city's most established running events — alongside the Schalke Marathon and the Gelsenkirchen Half Marathon.
