A Stadtgarten Classic Since 1990
The SommerSound im Stadtgarten is an institution in Gelsenkirchen's cultural landscape. Since 1990, the Gelsenkirchen City Cultural Department has organized the concert series on Sunday evenings during the NRW summer holidays. 2026 would have been the 35th edition — a remarkable anniversary for a community-focused event that always takes place free of charge. The Stadtgarten's music pavilion, a historic structure in the Buer district, serves as the stage.
Concept: Five Sundays, Contemporary Folk, Two Sets
The format is clear and consistent: Every Sunday of the NRW summer holidays, two bands or acts perform — the first at 6:00 PM, the second at 7:30 PM. Admission is from 5:30 PM. Entry is free; a beer garden service with drinks and snacks is available on site. The series has focused on contemporary folk for years — from singer-songwriters and indie-folk collectives to crossover projects with world music elements.

The 35th edition is scheduled for the five Sundays of July 26, August 2, August 9, August 16, and August 23, 2026. The complete band lineup is expected to be announced by the Gelsenkirchen City Cultural Department in May 2026.

On March 26, 2026, a fire occurred at the historic Stadtgarten music pavilion. The City of Gelsenkirchen officially stated: "The effects of the fire at the music pavilion on March 26 on this year's SommerSound are currently being assessed." The event for 2026 is therefore conditional — it may be shortened, moved to an alternative location, or adapted in format. Be sure to check the latest city announcements before traveling.
Gelsenkirchen-Buer and the Stadtgarten
Gelsenkirchen's Stadtgarten is located in the Buer district in the north of the city, a formerly independent town that was merged with Gelsenkirchen in 1928. The park, with its old trees, pond, and music pavilion, is a green lung of this Ruhr area city. SommerSound embodies exactly what characterizes Gelsenkirchen culturally: accessibility, free events for all generations, promotion of local music, and a natural connection to the neighborhood.

The organizer is the City of Gelsenkirchen, Cultural Department. The musical program is expected to be announced in May 2026 — previous years featured singer-songwriters, indie-folk bands, and world music acts. A beer garden service with drinks and snacks is available on site. Due to the pavilion fire on March 26, 2026, the city is assessing how the 2026 season can take place.

Getting There
Car: Take the A 2 motorway, exit Gelsenkirchen-Buer, then follow signs for Stadtgarten Buer. Train: Take the S-Bahn S 9 line to Gelsenkirchen-Buer-Süd, then walk for about 10 minutes. Bus: Lines 380, 381, 383 (stop Goldbergstraße/Buer Rathaus).
Prices
Free admission. Food and drinks in the beer garden at usual prices.
Tip
Bring picnic blankets and folding chairs — the lawns around the pavilion are popular spots. In case of rain, the concert will only take place if the pavilion allows; the status for 2026 is unclear after the fire — check gelsenkirchen.de in advance.
