Every Saturday from March to October: Rheinhessen wine, Mainzer Weck and Worscht at three city center squares
Since the 1990s, the Mainzer Marktfrühstück has evolved into one of Germany's most renowned weekly market events. Unlike many other weekly markets, the focus here is not primarily on shopping, but on convivial gatherings over a glass of Rheinhessen wine, a Mainzer Bratwurst, and a fresh roll. The motto “Weck, Worscht und Woi" – in High German: rolls, sausage, and wine – embodies precisely that unpretentious breakfast culture that characterizes Mainz and its surroundings.
For years, the organizer has been the association Die Mainzer Winzer e.V., which brings together wine-growing families from the Rheinhessen region. At rotating stalls, they serve Riesling, Silvaner, Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder, and Weißburgunder from their own vineyards – mostly dry, often award-winning, and almost always in a relaxed market atmosphere. Those who want to know more can chat personally with the vintners.
For the 2026 season, the concept has been spatially restructured. Starting on Saturday, March 7, the Marktfrühstück will be present for the first time at Tritonplatz and Fischtorplatz directly on the Rhine promenade. From Saturday, March 14, the traditional Schillerplatz will be added as a central location. This division into three sites distributes visitor flows better, creates more space for individual stalls, and makes the format more attractive for families and groups.
In addition to the wine stalls, bakers and butchers offer their fresh products: artisanal baked rolls, Mainzer Spundekäs (a cream cheese dip), Worscht in all variations (Bratwurst, Saumagen, liver sausage on bread), cheese from regional production, and vegetarian alternatives. In autumn, Federweißer (young wine) and Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart) are added – a culinary accompaniment to the grape harvest in Rheinhessen's vineyards.
The Marktfrühstück has long been a social event: students, tourists, families, regulars – anyone out and about in Mainz on a Saturday meets at Schillerplatz, Tritonplatz, or Fischtorplatz. From late morning into the early afternoon, the atmosphere remains lively, often accompanied by street musicians. Free admission.
Highlights of the 2026 season include the opening Saturdays (March 7 and 14) and the autumn weeks in October with Federweißer and Zwiebelkuchen. The weekly program is seasonal: in spring and summer, fresh white and Burgundy wines dominate; in autumn, Federweißer and late harvests from the current vintage are added. Which vintners and producers are present at which location is published weekly on the channels of Die Mainzer Winzer.
The exact program for 2026 will be published weekly by the organizer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Free admission. Wine, snacks, and market goods are subject to charge.
