Art Meets Community
As summer truly gets underway in Sandersdorf-Brehna, the grounds of the Diakonieverein in the Wolfen district become a festival site for a day. For several years now, the Art and Culture Festival has brought together artists, musicians, theater groups, and dance schools from across the Anhalt-Bitterfeld region on a common stage — a town festival that consciously highlights the cultural diversity of a formerly industrial region.
Sandersdorf-Brehna is part of the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The town was formed in 2010 through the merger of the towns of Brehna, Sandersdorf, Roitzsch, Petersroda, Heideloh, and Glebitzsch — a young municipality with a large geographical span and many districts, each with its own history and identity. The venue, the Diakonieverein in Wolfen, embodies the region's social commitment: here, church-based social work and cultural life merge.
The festival concept is straightforward and effective: from late afternoon until late at night, various stations open up on the grounds — a main stage with live music, a dance and performance area, an art and workshop zone where children and adults can paint, sculpt, craft, or try out printmaking workshops together. Local artists present their works in an open-air exhibition; theater groups from Bitterfeld, Halle, and Dessau perform short plays; dance schools present performances in classical, modern, and hip-hop styles. Culinary offerings — from bratwurst and beer to vegetarian options and street food — complete the experience.
The festival is explicitly designed as a family event. Workshops for children, hands-on activities, and a dedicated children's program ensure that multiple generations can enjoy themselves simultaneously. The organizers are the town of Sandersdorf-Brehna together with the Kulturverein Sandersdorf-Brehna e.V., the Diakonieverein, and other regional partners.
A Growing Cultural Platform
With the Art and Culture Festival, Sandersdorf-Brehna positions itself as a culturally active town in a region that, after years of industrial change — shaped by the Wolfen film factory, Bitterfeld chemistry, and lignite mining — is now developing new perspectives with its location between the major cities of Halle, Leipzig, and Dessau-Roßlau, and the Goitzsche lake district. The festival is part of this cultural work: not large, but diverse, not prominent, but vibrant.
