Largest festival for Spanish- and Latin American cinema in Germany — Country focus Uruguay
CINELATINO was initiated by the Tübingen Film Days and has grown since the 1990s to become the most important forum for Spanish- and Latin American cinema in Germany. The festival runs annually in April parallel in four cities in Baden-Württemberg — Tübingen, Stuttgart, Freiburg, and Reutlingen — bringing current productions, festival hits, premieres, as well as classics and retrospectives to southern Germany. The program includes feature films, short films, documentaries, and animation.
Each year's country focus is dedicated to a film nation from the region; in 2026, the choice falls on Uruguay. The smallest Spanish-speaking country in South America has developed an independent cinematic tradition, often underestimated by festival audiences. Characteristic is a subtle, often melancholic humor — films that address social and political themes with quiet irony. Feature films by current Uruguayan directors, several premieres, and a discussion with invited filmmakers are expected.
The thematic focus of the 2026 edition is dedicated to Human Rights in Latin America — in cooperation with the relevant department at the University of Tübingen. Films address poverty, food security, lack of education, indigenous rights, femicides, and political repression. Accompanying discussion evenings and film talks with guests from academia and filmmaking will be organized.
The main venue in Freiburg is the Kommunales Kino Freiburg in the Alten Wiehrebahnhof (Urachstraße 40, Wiehre/Innenstadt district). The Kommunales Kino is one of the oldest municipal cinemas in Germany and enjoys cult status in Freiburg's cultural scene. With its curated program, film talks, and dedicated regular audience, it perfectly matches the festival's aesthetic. Freiburg, as a university city and culturally open-minded city on the edge of the Black Forest, offers a vibrant festival audience of students, cinephiles, and the Latin American community.
Freiburg im Breisgau (urban district, AGS 08311) is the fourth-largest city in Baden-Württemberg with around 235,000 inhabitants and the cultural center of Southern Baden. The Wiehre district, where the Kommunales Kino is located, is one of the city's most charming residential areas with Wilhelminian-era architecture and a dense network of cafés and cultural venues — an ideal festival setting.
From Wednesday, April 22 to Wednesday, April 29, 2026, CINELATINO will transform the Kommunales Kino Freiburg into a stage for Spanish and Latin American cinema for a week. Feature films, short films, documentaries, and animation from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Brazil (in Portuguese), and other film nations are invited.
The 2026 edition focuses on two main themes: the country focus on Uruguay, featuring the characteristic, subtly ironic cinema of this smallest Spanish-speaking country in South America, and the thematic focus on Human Rights in Latin America, curated in cooperation with the Human Rights Chair at the University of Tübingen.
