About Festspiele MV Neustrelitz

The Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are among the largest classical music festivals in Germany. Every summer, they fill around 90 unusual venues across the state — from village churches to manor houses. In Neustrelitz, the classicist Orangery is one of these special venues: a hall built in 1755, extensively renovated between 2020 and 2024. Here, the festival concerts meet a backdrop that is itself part of the experience. Those seeking classical music away from anonymous concert halls will find a place in Neustrelitz where music and history resonate together.

One of Germany's Largest Classical Music Festivals

The Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have existed since 1990 and are among the most important classical music festivals in the country. Over an entire summer, they offer around 120 concerts at about 90 venues, bringing around 1,500 artists to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The special feature: instead of large concert halls, which are rare in this expansive state, village churches, country houses, barns, castles, and industrial monuments become concert venues.

The Orangery as a Venue

In Neustrelitz, the baroque Residenzstadt in the Mecklenburg Lake District (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state), the Orangery is one of the festival venues. The building was erected in 1755 as a winter shelter for exotic plants and later converted into an elegant ballroom. Between 2020 and 2024, it underwent comprehensive renovation. Today, the interior impresses with three color-themed rooms — blue, yellow, and red — as well as classicist sculptures and historical furnishings.

Program Series with Their Own Profile

The festival works with distinguished program series: "Unerhörte Orte" (Unheard-of Places) opens up unusual venues and tells their stories, while the "Junge Elite" (Young Elite) series showcases outstanding young artists. The Orangery, in particular, is ideal for intimate chamber and solo programs where the audience is close to the musicians.

Neustrelitz and the Festival

For Neustrelitz and the entire Lake District, the festival is a cultural highlight of the summer. It complements the Residenzstadt's rich event offerings — from the Palace Garden Festival to the Organ Summer — with classical music at an international level.
