Neustrelitz celebrates its city birthday with a flower festival for the whole family
The Strelitzia Festival is the annual city festival of Neustrelitz, the baroque residence city in the Mecklenburg Lake District (state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). It is celebrated on the third weekend in May to mark the city's birthday – Neustrelitz looks back on almost three hundred years of history as a systematically planned residence city. The festival's name is a nod to the Strelitzia, an exotic flower that gained international fame through Duchess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
The Strelitzia Festival is spread across several areas of the city center: Kulturquartier, Schlossstraße, Kunsthaus, Marktplatz, Rietpietschgang, Strelitzer Straße, and Schlossberg. Stages, stalls, and activities await everywhere. During the day, dance groups, live music, magic, and walking acts create a lively atmosphere, complemented by arts and crafts, regional gastronomy, and club presentations.
The Strelitzia Festival is explicitly a family festival. On the "Blaulichtmeile" (Blue Light Mile), the fire brigade, police, THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief), and other organizations provide insights into their work. At the Kunsthaus, bouncy castles, a pump track, and Segway courses invite visitors to try them out, while the city's utility company sets up a climbing wall. In the Kulturquartier, the well-known KiKA presenter Christian Bahrmann hosts a children's program with puppet theater and a children's disco.
In the evening, the festival moves to Schlossberg. Music bands, a DJ, and dancing round off the day before a fire and flame show concludes the Strelitzia Festival in a spectacular fashion – a sight that attracts thousands of visitors every year.
