250 Years of Theatre in the Seenplatte
"Spielt! 250 Years of Theatre for the Seenplatte" is an anniversary production by the Theater und Orchester Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz (TOG) in the Mecklenburg Lake District (Mecklenburgische Seenplatte) county. The occasion is a significant milestone: 250 years ago, in 1776, Duke Adolf Friedrich IV. of Mecklenburg-Strelitz granted the travelling theatre troupe of impresario Peter Florenz Ilgener a permanent base for performances. The troupe performed in Neubrandenburg during the summer and in the ducal residence city of Neustrelitz during the winter – marking the beginning of an uninterrupted theatrical tradition.
A Cross-Genre Celebration
The production "Spielt!" is conceived as a grand, cross-genre pasticcio. It unites the TOG ensembles from drama, musical theatre, and dance, bringing two and a half centuries of stage history to life in a single evening. The premiere is on May 23, 2026, at the Landestheater Neustrelitz.
The Landestheater Neustrelitz
The venue for the anniversary production is the Landestheater Neustrelitz on Schlossstraße. This theatre is one of the two permanent performance spaces of the TOG and is in direct succession to the stage that began its history in 1776. For the city of Neustrelitz and the entire Seenplatte region, the theatre is a cultural centre of supra-regional importance.
Theatre as Part of Regional Identity
With "Spielt!", the TOG not only honours its own history but also the role of theatre in a predominantly rural region. 250 years of theatre for the Seenplatte mean 250 years of cultural provision for a large area – an anniversary that the celebratory production makes visible and tangible.
