Germany's largest operetta festival against a baroque backdrop on Neustrelitz Castle Hill
The Festspiele im Schlossgarten in Neustrelitz, in the Mecklenburg Lake District (state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), have been a firm highlight of the North German cultural summer since their founding in 2001. The organizer is the Theater und Orchester Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz (TOG), which brings an elaborate production to the festival stage on the Schlossberg every summer. Due to the consistent dedication to the genre, the festival is considered Germany's largest operetta festival.
Performances take place on the Schlossberg in the baroque Neustrelitz Castle Garden. The neoclassical castle church forms the natural stage backdrop—an image that gives the festival its unmistakable character. The extensive park, once part of the residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, is a sight in itself and makes attending the festival an excursion into the city's history.
The festival program is not limited to the central operetta production. Every summer, guest performances, tribute concerts, children's and family shows, as well as classical concerts complement the offerings. This creates a diverse open-air program that appeals to operetta lovers, families, and concertgoers alike.
Over the summer weeks, the festival draws visitors from all over Germany to Neustrelitz. For the city and the entire Mecklenburg Lake District, it is a significant cultural and tourist factor—and a reason to discover the baroque ducal city on Lake Zierker.
The centerpiece of the 2026 festival season is "Die Csárdásfürstin" by Emmerich Kálmán, one of the most successful operettas in theater history. The plot takes us to Budapest and Vienna around 1910: The celebrated chanson singer Sylva Varescu loves the Viennese Prince Edwin—but his family already has other marriage plans. A turbulent story about love, social boundaries, and the question of whether the two can go together.
The production is the responsibility of TOG Intendant Sven Müller, with musical direction by Kenichiro Kojima, choreography by Amy Share-Kissiov, and stage and costumes by Lena Brexendorff. Eleven performances are planned on the Schlossberg, against the backdrop of the castle church. A large portion of the tickets were already sold by March 2026.
The operetta will be complemented by a supporting program of guest performances and concerts.
