Traditional Marquee Kirchweih on Schlossplatz in front of the Schlosskirche Lahm
The Lahm Kirchweih is the annual marquee Kirchweih (church consecration festival) of Lahm, a district of Itzgrund in the Coburg district, in the state of Bavaria. The venue is the historic Schlossplatz directly in front of the Protestant Schlosskirche Lahm, a striking ecclesiastical building whose history dates back to the late Middle Ages. The event is organized by the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Lahm/Pülsdorf (Volunteer Fire Brigade), the TSV 1961 Lahm (Sports Club), and the local Protestant-Lutheran parish.
The program traditionally begins on Saturday evening with the first Kirchweih beer served in the festival marquee. The highlight is Kirchweih Sunday, featuring a festive service held as a family service within the marquee in front of the church, followed by Frühschoppen (morning pint), a communal lunch, and an afternoon program. The fire brigade frequently uses the festival to officially bless and commission new vehicles or equipment in the presence of the village community.
Unlike commercial folk festivals (Volksfeste), the catering in Lahm is handled by the local clubs themselves: fire brigade members and club members cook, grill, and serve drinks, while the women of the parish take care of coffee, cakes, and sweet pastries. The proceeds go towards club activities, the purchase of new fire brigade equipment, and the maintenance of the Schlosskirche.
Lahm im Itzgrund is famous for its 17th-century Renaissance castle (Schloss der Familie von Lichtenstein) and its associated Schlosskirche. The Kirchweih is one of the few events of the year where this special ensemble of buildings is publicly used for a festival – an experience that makes the connection between village tradition, Protestant piety, and Franconian conviviality tangible.
In spring 2026, the Lahm district of the municipality of Itzgrund will once again host the traditional Kirchweih (church consecration festival) on the Schlossplatz in front of the Schlosskirche. Kirchweih Sunday is April 26, 2026; the festival marquee will be erected in the preceding days by FFW Lahm/Pülsdorf and TSV 1961 Lahm.
The weekend program includes the opening evening on Saturday with the first Kirchweih beer and an evening program in the marquee, the festive service on Sunday morning in the marquee, Frühschoppen (morning pint) with club catering, lunch, and a cozy get-together on Sunday afternoon and evening.
Free admission. Food and drinks are sold in the festival marquee at club-standard prices.
