27th Edition — Volksfest and Kirmes in Essen's West
Essen-Dellwig is a district of the city of Essen, with around 11,000 inhabitants in District IV (Borbeck), in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Located in the north of the city between the districts of Borbeck, Frintrop, and Gerschede, Dellwig is a classic Ruhr area residential neighbourhood — characterized by former mining settlements, established community structures, and an active civic association that bundles neighbourhood life. Donnerstraße is the central shopping street — and the event axis for the Happy Days.
The Happy Days Dellwig were held for the 27th time in 2026 by the Dellwig Civic Association (BVV) in cooperation with Rendschmidt GmbH and the Biergarten Dellwig — a neighbourhood festival that emerged from the volunteer engagement of Dellwig's associations, local retail, and families. Organizer Renate Rendschmidt thanks associations, stallholders, and helpers after each festival — the association's language is classically cooperative, mutual, and neighbourhood-focused.
Five festival days, with a different focus each evening:
Classic Volksfest format with amusement rides for all ages: carousel, mechanical bull, bumper cars, swing carousel, and smaller children's rides. Stalls with bratwurst, potato pancakes, fries, candied almonds, crêpes, and drinks. The Biergarten Dellwig as the local anchor remains open beyond the festival's end — a proven extension of the summer festival season, maintaining the festival's identity-forming character.
The stage on Donnerstraße will feature several live acts in 2026: Voodoo Chili (cover and rock program), Normaler Tag (German-language pop-rock cover band), and other regional acts. The stage program is coordinated by the BVV and evolves from family daytime programs on Thursday/Sunday to more rock-oriented evenings on Friday and Saturday.
The festival is supported by local companies such as the Privat-Brauerei Stauder, the Sparkasse Essen, and other fairground showmen. The Dellwig Civic Association sees the festival not just as an event, but as lived neighbourhood spirit: "After the Happy Days is before the Happy Days." The 28th edition in 2027 is already in planning.
