Street Food, Regional Market and Sundowner Vibes from March to October
What started in 2018 as a small market with a few food trucks has become Bottrop's most popular city center format in 2026. From March 27th to October 2026, the Feierabendmarkt transforms the Ruhr area city's center into an open lounge once a week (Thursday or Friday) — with street food, cocktail bars, regional products, and a relaxed sundowner atmosphere.
Previously, the Feierabendmarkt was firmly set for Thursdays. In 2026, organizer Matthias Stachowiak is opening up to Friday dates. The reasoning in his own words: "Many guests have wished for Friday dates so they don't have to work the next day and can celebrate longer." The flexible day planning also allows for a greater variety of vendors with different capacities — making the market more dynamic and diverse.
The 2026 season will use three central squares:
19 dates will take place in Bottrop's city center, 6 more in Kirchhellen.
The Feierabendmarkt is clearly defined: not a classic weekly market, but a meeting point format. People come directly from the office or home office, grab a meal, a drink, meet friends, and stay for two to three hours. The standing tables and benches are full, the volume is moderate, the feeling of life: Ruhr area sundowner.
The season starts on Friday, March 27th, 2026 — a deliberate decision by the organizer to kick off the new season with a Friday date to immediately highlight the novelty.
The independent city of Bottrop, with around 117,000 inhabitants, is located on the northern edge of the Ruhr area. The Feierabendmarkt city center format has significantly contributed to the revitalization of the city core in recent years — Bottrop has thus provided an example of how smaller Ruhr area city centers can position themselves against the trend of retail concentration. With the district of Kirchhellen in the north (more Münsterland-rural in character than Ruhr area-like), the format is simultaneously extended into the wider region.
The 2026 season expands the format to include Friday dates — at the request of many guests. This increases variability and vendor rotation. Street food, cocktail bars, regional producers, and live music continue to form the program. A total of 25 season dates, 19 of which are in Bottrop-Mitte and 6 in Kirchhellen.
Free admission. Consumption for a fee.
A total of 25 dates from the end of March to October 2026. Thursday and Friday dates. Bottrop-Mitte (Rathausplatz or Kirchplatz): 19 editions. Kirchhellen (Johann-Breuker-Platz): 6 editions. The exact dates and locations will be published on bottrop.de and the Facebook page.
Usually 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM (possibly longer in midsummer). Season opening: Friday, March 27th, 2026.
Bottrop-Mitte: A2 or A42, exit Bottrop. Parking in city center parking garages. By train: RB to Bottrop Hbf, approx. 5 minutes walk. Kirchhellen: from Bottrop-Mitte via the B223. Parking available at Johann-Breuker-Platz and surrounding areas.
Free admission. Consumption (food, drinks, products) for a fee — most stalls accept cards, some only cash.
Come on a Friday date in summer: longer stays are allowed, the atmosphere is more intense, many stay until the end. And: one of the most beautiful spots is the Johann-Breuker-Platz in Kirchhellen — the village charm in the north of Bottrop makes the market there something special.
