Apple Wine Tradition in the Spessart

Apple wine – known as "Ebbelwoi" or "Äppelwoi" in Hessian and the adjacent Lower Franconian Spessart – has a long tradition in this region. In the municipality of Hausen, in the Aschaffenburg district (Bavaria), it is kept alive by the "Harmonie" Hausen Music Association with its annual Ebbelwoifest. The festival combines culinary customs with the convivial club life of the Spessart village.

Brass Music, Ebbelwoi, and Specialties

The venue is the Erwin-Braun-Festhalle on Dornauer Weg. Regional apple wine, Spessart specialties, and hearty brass music from the organizing music association are on offer. The festival traditionally begins with a church service, followed by the convivial festival activities – a typical Franconian-Spessart club festival with music, food, and socializing.

Like many village festivals in Bavaria, the Ebbelwoifest relies on volunteer commitment: The "Harmonie" Hausen Music Association organizes the festival, provides the music, and brings the community together with the apple wine festival.
