Swedish Town Festival in the Mainfranken Old Town
When the Midsummer night approaches in Karlstadt am Main, the medieval old town becomes the stage for a very special town festival. The Karschter Mittsommer uses the historical connection of the Mainfranken district town to Sweden as an occasion for a festival that proudly presents itself with a wink as "the most Swedish town festival in Unterfranken." The reference point is the small Swedish guard figures – the so-called Schwedenmännle – on Karlstadt's town hall, commemorating the visit of Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus during the Thirty Years' War.
The festival takes place on the market square with the late Gothic town hall, as well as the adjacent alleys around Maingasse. Three stages distribute live music throughout the city center, and the entire area is traffic-calmed. Local gastronomy and retail are involved – many shops open longer, cafés and restaurants serve Swedish-inspired dishes and drinks fitting the occasion.
Karlstadt in the Main-Spessart district, located on the right bank of the Main River in Bavaria, cultivates a consciously lived city identity. The Schwedenmännle stand as a symbol of the region's turbulent history during the Thirty Years' War, when Swedish troops passed through Unterfranken. With the Karschter Mittsommer, the city marketing team picks up this historical thread and links it with the contemporary charm of a district capital that celebrates its very own Midsummer between vineyards and the Main riverbank.
The 2026 edition expands the festival to three days for the first time, from Friday to Sunday (June 12–14, 2026), thus encompassing the entire Midsummer weekend. The old town will be decorated in the Swedish national colors of blue and yellow, and the musical heart of the festival will beat on the market square, overlooking the late Gothic town hall.
The culinary highlights – Viking burgers, Mittsommerbier, Schweden-Schoppen, and schnapps specialties – remain characteristic, as does the mix of traditional parade culture and a relaxed summer town festival in the district capital on the Main.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published by Stadtmarketing Karlstadt in spring 2026. Based on previous editions, the following framework can be expected:
