A Village Festival Connecting Two Countries
It is one of the most beautiful stories of the Saarland-Lorraine border region: Since 1966, the municipality of Großrosseln in the Saarbrücken regional association has maintained a partnership with the neighboring French municipality of Petite-Rosselle in the Moselle department. The two places are separated only by the Rossel, a small river, and a bridge – physically no distance, historically much. Precisely from this constellation, the annual cross-border village festival emerged, which has since become one of the flagship events of Saarland-French friendship.
Where the Festival Takes Place
The festival center is Bahnhofstraße on the Rossel bridge, which connects the two town centers. On the Saarland side, the central event area is the "Place du Jumelage" (Square of the Twin Towns) – a symbol of their shared history. The official opening traditionally takes place on Saturday afternoon around 5:00 PM; afterwards, stalls open on both sides of the bridge, and the public strolls casually between Germany and France – without a passport, without border controls, in true Schengen style.
60 Years of Partnership – The 2026 Anniversary Edition
2026 will be a special year: the 60th anniversary of the twin towns partnership is to be celebrated with a significantly expanded program. The village festival on September 5th and 6th, 2026, will form the first highlight; from September 10th to 13th, an anniversary week will follow with official receptions, cultural events, and encounters between clubs, schools, and citizens of both towns.
Program and Atmosphere
The village festival combines the typical elements of a Saarland local festival (Bratwurst, Schwenker, beer, live music) with French accents (wine from the Moselle Valley, crêpes, quiches, music from Lorraine). Both club landscapes participate – music clubs, sports clubs, carnival clubs, fire brigades. Politicians from both sides typically give their speeches bilingually, which contributes to the relaxed atmosphere.
Petite-Rosselle and Mining
Visitors to the festival should consider a detour to the Musée Les Mineurs Wendel in Petite-Rosselle – the largest mining museum in France, documenting the history of Lorraine coal mining. It is located just a few hundred meters from the Rossel bridge and complements the understanding of why the two municipalities are so closely connected: Coal mining was organized across borders for centuries, and many people worked and lived on both sides.
A Model for Lived German-French Partnership
There are numerous municipal twin town partnerships with Lorraine municipalities in the Saarland – but few are lived as directly and as daily as the one between Großrosseln and Petite-Rosselle. The village festival is more than just a tourist event; it is the annual confirmation of a relationship that began with post-war reconciliation and has deepened continuously over three generations.
