Summer festival of the Landestheater Oberpfalz against the backdrop of the 700-year-old Leuchtenberg Castle
The Burgfestspiele Leuchtenberg, officially designated as the Summer Festival of the Landestheater Oberpfalz for several years, are among the largest and most traditional open-air theatre festivals in Bavaria. For over 30 years, the Landestheater Oberpfalz has been using the imposing ruins of Leuchtenberg Castle (construction began over 700 years ago) in the Neustadt an der Waldnaab district.
A characteristic feature is the decentralized venue concept: in addition to the main stage at Leuchtenberg Castle, performances are held at several historical venues in the Oberpfalz region — including Friedrichsburg Castle, the Schönbergbühne, and other locations in the districts of Neustadt an der Waldnaab, Tirschenreuth, and Schwandorf. This transforms the festival into a cultural event that engages the entire region.
The repertoire ranges from world literature and classics to contemporary comedies, children's and family plays, and dialect pieces in the Oberpfalz dialect. Each season features around eight productions in approximately 100 performances, attracting around 30,000 spectators annually.
The 2026 season begins on June 3rd with Hugo von Hofmannsthal's 'Jedermann' at the castle stage. Further productions include 'Das Neinhorn' based on the picture book by Marc-Uwe Kling, 'The Adventures of the Good Soldier Švejk' based on Jaroslav Hašek, and the comedy 'Nipple Jesus' by Nick Hornby at Friedrichsburg Castle. The season runs until the end of July.
