95 stalls, Finnish village and the Red Tower as a backdrop
Anyone standing in Halle (Saale) on the market square sees one of the densest architectural ensembles in Saxony-Anhalt: the Marktkirche St. Marien with its four towers (which, according to legend, once had a secret elevator), the Red Tower, the Händel monument in the center, and the historic Ratswaage. On a normal weekday, the market square is a traffic hub and meeting point — but for four weeks a year, it's a Christmas market.
With 95 stalls, the Halle Christmas Market is one of the largest in Saxony-Anhalt. It opens every year on the last Tuesday in November and runs until December 23rd. The city of Halle is the organizer, closely linking the market rights to the heritage of salt production — evident in the Halloren chocolate stalls, salt-boiling demonstrations, and references to the saltworks.
What sets this market apart from other Central German Christmas markets is the Finland component. Halle and the North Finnish city of Oulu have been partner cities since 2017; this connection gave rise to the 'Arctic Village', a Finnish village right in the middle of the market square. At its center: a seven-meter-high Lappish tent (Kota). Around it: stalls with *Flammlachs* (salmon grilled over an open fire), *Glögi* (Finnish mulled wine made from cranberries), cinnamon liqueur, licorice, and reindeer specialties. The Finnish team travels the furthest of all market vendors, covering 2,600 kilometers. The highlight is the annual Finnish Festival on St. Nicholas Day (December 6th).
Over the four weeks, the city offers a dense stage program: puppeteers, concerts by regional choirs, children's choirs from Halle schools, classical brass ensembles. Santa Claus visits the market daily from 2 PM to 4 PM, available for photos and wish letters.
The market square is just one of several Christmas locations in Halle. The winter market at Hallmarkt with an ice rink, the Marktschorre as a late summer drink, the stalls in front of the Marktkirche — Halle designs the Advent season systematically. Those planning a day trip can combine the market with the Händel House, climbing the Marienturm (with a view over Halle), or visiting the Red Tower.
The city of Halle continues the proven concept: a central market square in front of the Marktkirche and the Red Tower, 95 stalls with culinary specialties, arts and crafts, and Christmas items. The Finnish village from the partner city Oulu returns and is a firm centerpiece with its Lappish tent, grilled salmon fire, and glögi bar.
The stage program is spread across the small market stage and performances in front of the Marktkirche. During the day, children's choirs from Halle schools set the scene, while in the evening, brass and vocal ensembles take over.

Halle (Saale) Hbf is an ICE train hub (Berlin 1:00 h, Leipzig 25 min, Frankfurt 3:00 h, Munich 3:30 h). From the station to the market: Tram line 5 (stop Marktplatz, 4 minutes) or a 10-minute walk.
Sunday–Thursday 10 AM — 9 PM, Friday–Saturday 10 AM — 10 PM. Exceptions on opening day and Christmas Eve. Opening 2026: November 24th. Last day: December 23rd.
Free admission.
Weekdays during the day (except Friday) are quieter. Climbing the tower of the Marktkirche offers a view over the entire market.
