Public New Year's Eve celebration in Koblenz Old Town at Am Plan with fireworks over the Rhine
The New Year's Eve Celebration at Am Plan is the major public event for ringing in the New Year in Koblenz. The venue is the central square Am Plan in the Old Town, which, situated between the Church of Our Lady, the Florinsmarkt axis, and Münzstraße, is one of the historic focal points of Koblenz's city center.
What makes Koblenz's New Year's Eve unique is its location: From Am Plan or the nearby Rhine promenade, you have an unparalleled view at midnight. The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress on the right bank of the Rhine is illuminated, the Deutsches Eck with the equestrian statue of Kaiser Wilhelm I is visible, as are the outlines of the Old Town, the Florinskirche, and the bridges over the Moselle and Rhine. Thousands of private midnight fireworks rise into the sky from all directions, reflecting in the Rhine.
The City of Koblenz sets up a simple open-air setup at Am Plan: food and drink stalls offering mulled wine, sparkling wine, and small snacks, background music via loudspeakers or live, security measures, and waste disposal. The actual festive atmosphere is created by the people themselves: families, groups of friends, tourists, young and old Koblenz residents mingle and toast the New Year together.
Parallel to the public celebration at Am Plan, Koblenz offers various private New Year's Eve events: gala dinners in the major hotels, themed parties in city center clubs, and New Year's Eve cruises organized by Rhine shipping companies, featuring dinner programs and live music on the Rhine. For those who prefer a quieter celebration, good vantage points for the fireworks can be found along the Rhine gardens, the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress Bridge, or the Asterstein viewpoint.
Due to the large number of visitors and fireworks, the City of Koblenz recommends arriving early, using public transport, refraining from bringing strollers and large bags, and paying attention to instructions from the police and security forces. Bus and train services are partially extended on New Year's Eve by koveb/RNV.
On New Year's Eve 2026, the Am Plan square in Koblenz's Old Town will once again be the central meeting point for the public New Year's Eve celebration. The City of Koblenz is organizing the event in its established format. The exact program – with a potential stage, live music, and schedule – will be published in December 2026.
