Traditional Franconian Marian Singing on Whit Sunday in the Basilica
The Basilica Vierzehnheiligen, built by Balthasar Neumann and consecrated in 1772, is considered one of the most significant examples of Southern German Baroque sacred architecture. The pilgrimage church above Bad Staffelstein (Upper Franconia, Lichtenfels district) is one of Germany's most important Marian pilgrimage sites. It is in this very setting that the Fränkisches Mariensingen takes place annually on Whit Sunday.
The approximately one-hour devotion alternates between singing, instrumental pieces, and contemplative readings in Franconian dialect. Maria Kutzelmann moderates with texts between the musical pieces. The focus is on the veneration of the Mother of God — through Marian songs dating from the 18th to the 20th century, often originating from the pilgrimage tradition, especially from the tradition of the Austrian pilgrimage site Mariazell.
Past editions have featured classic Franconian folk music ensembles, including:
The participating groups change from year to year, but the program structure remains constant. The exact lineup for 2026 will be announced by the organizer closer to the date.
The Mariensingen is organized by the Franciscans of Vierzehnheiligen as the custodians of the basilica, the Bavarian State Association for Local Heritage, and the Working Group for Folk Music Upper Franconia. The annual event on Whit Sunday at 2:00 PM is part of a broader program of church music, pilgrimages, and concerts that runs throughout the year in Vierzehnheiligen (e.g., the "Organ Concerts for the Friday Bell Ringing").
Vierzehnheiligen is located above the town of Bad Staffelstein in the Franconian Upper Main Valley, opposite the equally renowned Kloster Banz. The region between Bamberg and Coburg cultivates an intensive tradition of pilgrimage and folk music; the Mariensingen is a central event in this calendar.
The 2026 edition continues the established format: sung and instrumental Marian songs, complemented by dialect texts between the musical pieces. The selection of participating singing and instrumental groups will be compiled by the Working Group for Folk Music Upper Franconia in coordination with the Franciscans and the Bavarian State Association for Local Heritage — the exact lineup for 2026 will be announced by the organizer closer to the date on vierzehnheiligen.de.
The devotion is part of the Pentecost program in Vierzehnheiligen, which traditionally also includes Pentecost services, organ concerts, and pilgrimage offerings.
The 2026 selection will be published by the organizer closer to the date. In previous years, participants included:
