Three-day town festival with market, city run, and fireworks display
Bützow is located in the Rostock district in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, about 30 km southwest of the Hanseatic city of Rostock. The Bützower Gänsemarkttage were founded at the end of the 1990s as a town festival and have since been the annual highlight in the city's event calendar. With the 2026 edition, the festival celebrates its 30th anniversary — a welcome occasion to expand the usual program with additional highlights.
The festival activities are spread across several areas of Bützow's town center: the main stage in front of the town hall with music, dance shows, and children's entertainment, the arts and crafts market on the Schlossplatz with potters, woodcarvers, blacksmiths, and regional producers, as well as amusement rides, game stalls, catering stands, and market areas in the adjacent streets. The town center becomes a festival zone, and traffic is diverted.
Classic program structure over three days: Friday opening with stage program and a large fireworks display in the evening; Saturday club mile with over 60 clubs, associations, and businesses presenting their work and offering hands-on activities; Sunday city run in the early morning and family afternoon with a children's program. Bützow presents itself as a lively small town with a high density of clubs and civic pride during these three days. Stefanie Höter (Tel. 038461 50-114) is responsible for coordination in the mayor's office.
The 30th edition brings back the familiar three-day format: Opening on Friday on the main stage in front of the town hall with a stage program and a large fireworks display in the evening; Saturday with the club mile, where over 60 clubs, associations, and businesses present their work, along with continuous stage program and market activities; Sunday starts with the traditional city run in the morning and culminates in the family afternoon with a children's program.
Parallel to the stage in front of the town hall, the arts and crafts market on the Schlossplatz presents its stalls, complemented by amusement rides, game stalls, catering, and general market areas in the adjacent streets. The festival committee, led by Stefanie Höter (Mayor's Office), coordinates the logistics. Additional program points are planned for the 30th anniversary — details will be published on buetzow.de.
Detailed program and stage artists will be published on buetzow.de. Inquiries to Stefanie Höter, Mayor's Office, Tel. 038461 50-114.
Admission to the town center and the Schlossplatz is free. Amusement rides, game stalls, market stalls, and food are paid for individually. Participation in the Bützow City Run requires separate registration with an entry fee — details available from the Mayor's Office and the town's website.
By car via the B103 or B104, Bützow is signposted. Parking is available on the outskirts of town; the town center is partly closed to traffic. By train via Rostock or Schwerin to Bützow main station, from there it is within walking distance to the town center.
Admission to the town center and the Schlossplatz is free. Amusement rides, market goods, and food are paid for individually on site. A separate entry fee applies for the city run on Sunday.
Those who want to experience the entire program should plan ahead: accommodation in Bützow and the surrounding area is scarce during this week. If possible, travel by train/public transport to avoid parking difficulties.
