Maritime Advent atmosphere on Rheinauhafen — Cologne's longest Christmas market
Cologne has many Christmas markets — the Cathedral, Heumarkt, Rudolfplatz, Neumarkt — but only one is directly on the water: the Harbour Christmas Market at the Chocolate Museum, located on Rheinauhafen. For over 25 years, it has been a firm fixture of Cologne's Advent season and, with its seven-week run, also the longest of its kind.
Rheinauhafen, once a freight port, is now one of Cologne's most modern urban districts. The three striking Kranhäuser dominate the skyline, and the Chocolate Museum on its peninsula between the Rhine and the harbour has become a landmark. In addition, there are historical elements: the swing bridge, the Malakoff Tower, the art'otel, and the nearby Cologne Giant Ferris Wheel. A unique setting for a Christmas market.
What sets the Harbour Christmas Market apart from others is its maritime staging: ship masts, ropes, anchor motifs, lanterns in the style of ship lamps, wooden stalls with a harbour character. In the background, the historic swing bridge. Directly on the Rhine promenade, it feels like a Christmas market in a small harbour town — right in the middle of the big city of Cologne.
Over 50 stalls offering arts and crafts (ceramics, jewellery, leather goods, stollen), food and drink (potato pancakes, bratwurst, mulled wine, punch, eggnog), maritime decorations, and Christmas sweets. Live music on weekends, local Cologne sound, Advent carols. The chocolate fountain show in the neighbouring Chocolate Museum is a family classic — many combine both.
Cologne is considered the Christmas market capital of Germany — six major markets, plus numerous smaller ones, attract over 6 million visitors each year. The Harbour Christmas Market complements the offerings with its waterfront location and is THE fairytale image of Cologne's Advent season. If you only have time for one market, this should be the one.
The Harbour Christmas Market 2026/27 opens for the 26th time, offering seven weeks of Advent atmosphere by the water. With the Chocolate Museum as a backdrop and the Giant Ferris Wheel in close proximity.
