Summer solstice with street food, design market, and midsummer pole in Rheinauhafen
The Mittsommerfest at the Chocolate Museum brings Scandinavian solstice traditions to Cologne's Rheinauhafen. From June 19th to 21st, 2026, the area around the Chocolate Museum will transform into an open stage for three days, featuring street food, a design market, live music, and family-friendly activities. The centerpiece of the event is the traditional midsummer pole, which is decorated together with visitors and ceremonially erected on Saturday evening.
The festival combines three classic open-air formats:
The mix appeals to a broad audience: families with children during the day, young adults in the evening, and art and design enthusiasts throughout the weekend.
The street food selection is part of the festival's reputation. Typical stalls — based on documented editions from previous years — offer:
The exact exhibitor list for 2026 will be communicated shortly before the festival on mittsommer-koeln.de.
The summer solstice has been celebrated in many cultures for millennia — as the shortest night and longest day of the year. The Cologne Midsummer Festival particularly embraces the Scandinavian tradition: The midsummer pole (Norwegian "midsommarstång", Swedish "majstång") is decorated with flowers, ribbons, and wreaths and ceremonially erected on Saturday evening. A gesture that emotionally centers the entire festival.
There is a dedicated play tent and a puppet theater for children. The stage program runs throughout the day with music, readings, and small performances. Admission is free — an important factor for the family-friendly atmosphere.
The Rheinauhafen is one of Germany's most spectacular urban development projects of the last 20 years: a former harbor area in the heart of Cologne's Südstadt, redeveloped into a mix of apartments, offices, restaurants, and cultural venues. The striking Kranhäuser (crane houses) are now landmarks. The Chocolate Museum forms the southern anchor — one of Cologne's most visited museums and thus a perfect venue for an urban open-air festival right on the Rhine.
The 2026 Mittsommerfest stages the longest night and longest day of the year on the Cologne Rhine promenade. Street food, design, and the traditional midsummer pole are at the center — three days of open atmosphere between the Kranhäuser and the Chocolate Museum.
Detailed program and exhibitor list will be communicated shortly before the festival on mittsommer-koeln.de.
