Picnic concert, choir, tango, and cabaret in Bergedorf's Rathauspark – the new summer format from OpenAir-Bergedorf e.V.
The Rathauspark is located in the center of Bergedorf-Zentrum, the historic core of Hamburg's easternmost district. Around the Bergedorf Town Hall, built in the 19th century, lies a small, dense park with old beeches, lindens, and yews, an urban space with a living room character. Here, OpenAir-Bergedorf e.V. has been organizing various open-air formats for over 15 years. In 2026, the association is consciously opting for a new form: the Sommerfest im Park.
The shift from classic open-air cinema to a participatory summer festival follows the explicit wishes of the Bergedorf audience. The focus is on the so-called "Picnic a cappella" – a communal picnic on the park lawn, interspersed with choir performances, a cappella contributions, and small music groups wandering among the picnic blankets. In addition, there is a small art exhibition in the park, tango workshops for beginners and advanced dancers, performances by regional choirs and bands, and a cabaret performance to conclude.
Tango open-air is one of the recurring favorite formats in Bergedorf – a dance floor made of wooden planks, live music from the small pavilion, with an emphasis on participation. The choir performances draw on Bergedorf's dense network of choirs (Bergedorfer Kammerchor, KirchenChor St. Petri, school choirs). The event concludes with a short cabaret set, bringing satirical texts about the district and its peculiarities to the park.
With its Vier- und Marschlande, Bergedorf is a world of its own within the state of Hamburg. The district has developed an astonishingly active cultural life in recent years: Lichtwarktheater, Kampnagel outpost, KörberHaus, choir festival, and now the Sommerfest im Park. OpenAir-Bergedorf e.V. stands in this line for volunteer cultural work that appeals equally to the district's audience and visitors from beyond the region.
The premiere of the new format falls on the last Sunday of August and utilizes the Rathauspark in its most beautiful summer light. The day is divided into four modules that flow seamlessly into one another: opening concert by a local a cappella ensemble, participatory picnic phase with wandering choir interludes, tango block with live music and dance floor, and a concluding cabaret in the early evening.
The concept aims for a collective atmosphere where audience and performers are barely separable. Those who wish can bring their own picnic blanket and snacks; those interested in tango can join the dance workshop in the afternoon.
Participating choirs and ensembles will be announced in good time via www.openair-bergedorf.de and the Bergedorfer Wochenblatt.
