Traditional Patronal Fair with Peter-and-Paul Market on Fair Tuesday
In the predominantly Catholic Saarland, patronal fairs (Kirmes celebrated in honor of the patron saint of a parish) are an important form of custom. Almost every village, every parish celebrates its Kirmes once a year on the patron saint's day or the following weekend. In Nalbach, the patron saints of the parish church are the apostles Peter and Paul, whose feast day is on June 29th — accordingly, the Kirmes takes place at the end of June or the beginning of July.
A very special tradition is the Peter-and-Paul Market on Fair Tuesday. This weekly market has centuries-old roots in Nalbach — farmers, traders, and craftsmen from the surrounding area come to the town center once a year to sell their goods at a special market. The market uniquely combines the character of a traditional weekly market (with food, clothing, household goods) and the festive atmosphere of a Kirmes (with sweets, snack stalls, and carousels).
Over the weekend — typically from Friday evening to Tuesday evening — the rides, shooting galleries, and snack stalls operate in the center of Nalbach. Local clubs — from the sports club to the carnival association to the parish youth — serve guests with Saarland specialties (Schwenker, Lyoner, fries, beer) and collect funds for their club activities. A classic club festival with a religious background.
The spiritual center of the Kirmes is the Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Nalbach. On the patron saint's day (or the following Sunday), a solemn high mass is held, often followed by a procession. This connection between a religious feast day and a secular fair is deeply rooted in Saarland customs — a form of popular piety that is not at all pathetic, but simply lived community.
Nalbach is a municipality in the district of Saarlouis with almost 9,000 inhabitants, located in the Saarland's Primstal valley. With the districts of Nalbach, Bilsdorf, Diefflen (Note: Diefflen belongs to Dillingen), and Piesbach, the municipality offers a typical Saarland mosaic of village communities and rural structures. The Kirmes is one of the most important community events.
As in previous years, the municipality of Nalbach, together with local clubs, is organizing the event. The exact dates for 2026 will be announced by the Nalbach Cultural Office in the spring of 2026.
