Black Forest Christmas Market around Bonndorf Castle
Bonndorf in the Black Forest — the "Ham City" — is one of those Black Forest communities that have preserved their authenticity. Here, the Bonndorf Christmas Market draws the region's population together in December: in front of the striking Bonndorf Castle, a 17th-century building in the historic town center that now serves as a city museum and event venue. Around 20 stalls are spread around the castle forecourt and in the inner courtyard — a manageable, quality-oriented selection rather than a mass market.
The stalls offer a typically Black Forest-influenced assortment: wood carvings from regional workshops, handmade candles, embroidery and wool textiles, Black Forest ham directly from the Bonndorf tradition, game specialties, Black Forest Kirschwasser, gingerbread, and regional honey products. Mulled wine, punch, candied almonds, and sausages complete the culinary offerings. Local clubs and non-profit initiatives run some stalls, with proceeds going to local social projects.
A Bonndorf specialty: In addition to the main market in the town center, the districts of Holzschlag (November 28–29, 2026) and Dillendorf (November 28, 2026) host their own small Christmas markets with a village character. Those traveling by car can visit all three markets in one weekend — the main market itself runs a bit later in December (December 18–20, 2026). This diversity shows how deeply the Advent culture is rooted in the Bonndorf community.
Bonndorf in the Black Forest is located in the Waldshut district in southern Baden-Württemberg, at an altitude of around 847 meters. The town with just under 7,000 inhabitants is known primarily for three things: its Black Forest ham (hence the nickname "Ham City"), the striking Wutach Gorge nearby, and its location in the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. In winter, Bonndorf is an ideal starting point for hikes, cross-country ski trails, and snowshoe tours. The Christmas Market fits perfectly into this winter Black Forest atmosphere — with a high probability of snow and always with a cozy character.
The Bonndorf Christmas Market 2026 takes place from Friday, December 18, to Sunday, December 20, at Bonndorf Castle. Around 20 stalls on the castle forecourt and in the inner courtyard offer Christmas handicrafts and culinary specialties from the Black Forest.
A Bonndorf specialty: Smaller Christmas markets are held in the districts concurrently. The Holzschlag Christmas Market runs from November 28 to 29, 2026, and the Dillendorf Christmas Market on November 28, 2026. Those traveling by car can combine these smaller markets with the main market.
The detailed program for 2026 with opening hours and stall assignments will be published by the City of Bonndorf on bonndorf.de and on schwarzwald-tourismus.info.
Free admission on all three market days. Food, drinks, and goods are sold at the respective stalls.
