30th Historical Harvest Festival at the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences Courtyard
When tractor and horse columns roll across the Strenzfeld hill to the manor farm on the last Saturday in August, it's harvest festival time. The Historical Harvest Festival in Bernburg-Strenzfeld – a district of the county town Bernburg in the Salzlandkreis district, state of Saxony-Anhalt – is one of the largest harvest festivals in Central Germany. The organizers are the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences (Department of Agriculture) and the State Institute for Agriculture and Horticulture Saxony-Anhalt. 2026 marks the 30th edition, a significant anniversary.
The traditional harvest procession kicks off at 10 am – a festive parade that visually narrates the development of agriculture from pre-industrial times to the present. Horse-drawn carriages, harvest machinery, traditional costume groups, and harvest wagons move through the manor farm grounds. Tractor parades continue throughout the day – with a specialty being the vintage vehicles from the 1920s, presented with expert commentary. A straw figure competition, a scarecrow exhibition, and animal demonstrations with chickens, sheep, goats, horses, and cattle round off the agricultural focus. Brass bands play on stage, followed by dance music.
A large farmers' market featuring regional products – sausages, bread, honey, cheese, Saale-Unstrut wines, spirits, preserves, honey – spreads across the manor farm. In the evening, the festival day transforms into a barn party: lively atmosphere, live music, local beer. The combination of tradition and celebration is what gives the festival its charm.
The Strenzfeld manor farm is not the festival venue by chance: it is a teaching and research farm of the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences with locations in Bernburg, Köthen, and Dessau. Students of agricultural sciences, landscape construction, and biotechnology are trained on the Strenzfeld campus. The harvest festival combines academic tradition with the agricultural practice of the Magdeburger Börde and the Salzlandkreis – one of Germany's most fertile agricultural regions.
In 2026, the Historical Harvest Festival celebrates its 30th edition. Organizers Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and the State Institute for Agriculture and Horticulture Saxony-Anhalt have prepared a traditional program that makes agricultural history tangible. The harvest procession, tractor parade with vintage vehicles, horse-drawn carriages, animal demonstrations, and farmers' market characterize the day.
