Open-air cinema on Ehingen's market square with lounge, street food, and cinema atmosphere under the starry sky
The Ehinger Marktplatz-Kino is one of the most charming open-air cinemas in Upper Swabia. For four evenings, the historic market square of Ehingen (Danube) transforms into a large, open-air cinema hall. Against the backdrop of the late Gothic Liebfrauenkirche and the pastel-colored burgher houses of the 18th century, a special atmosphere is created that no multiplex can offer — summer air, the distant sounds of the city, a glass of wine, and above all: watching together with hundreds of others under the open sky.
The City of Ehingen is responsible for the organization, but the film selection is made by Central Center Kino Ehingen — the local cinema operator that caters to the region's cinephiles year-round. The program features a mix of summer comedies, family films, and major cinematic hits that premiered in the spring and can now be enjoyed outdoors with the whole family. The official film list will be released a few weeks before the festival on the city's website.
Around the screen, the city sets up a small lounge area: beanbags, high tables, subdued lighting, and chillout music before the film begins. Local restaurateurs provide the audience with street food — burgers, bowls, vegan options, regional wines, and of course, the famous Ehinger Popcorn, which has become the festival's culinary trademark. The lounge opens about an hour before the film starts, allowing guests to arrive early and relax.
With just under 27,000 inhabitants, Ehingen is the largest town in the Alb-Donau district. The town is picturesquely situated at the transition from the Swabian Jura to the Danube valley — and despite its rural charm, it is a former fortress town with impressive architecture. The market square, with the Liebfrauenkirche, Konviktsgebäude, and Baroque burgher houses, is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Upper Swabia.
Open-air events always carry a risk. Should bad weather be forecast for the day of the event, the film will be shown instead in one of the halls of the Central Center Kino Ehingen. The decision is traditionally made on the afternoon of the respective screening day and communicated via the city of Ehingen's website and the official Instagram account. This ensures the film is guaranteed to be shown — no matter what the summer sky decides.
Four summer evenings, a large open-air screen, and Ehingen's historic market square as the backdrop: from Thursday, August 6, to Sunday, August 9, 2026, the city of Ehingen (Danube) invites you to the annual Marktplatz-Kino in cooperation with Central Center Kino. The event traditionally marks the start of the summer holidays in Baden-Württemberg.
Around the screen, a lounge area is set up with beanbags, chillout music, and small bars. Local restaurateurs provide the audience with burgers, bowls, and vegan specialties; Ehinger Popcorn is the festival's culinary trademark. Films start after dark, around 9:30 PM. Should the weather not cooperate, the film will be moved to the Central Center Kino hall — the decision will be announced on the afternoon of each day on the city's website and via Instagram.
