31st Edition – An Established Esens Sports Event

In 2026, the Esenser Stadtlauf will celebrate its 31st edition, making it one of the longest-established public running events in East Frisia. Simultaneously, it is also the 6th Volksbanklauf – the more recent dual designation reflects the main sponsorship by Volksbank Esens eG. On July 31, 2026, the event will be organized as an early evening run in Esens.

Distances for All Age Groups

The concept includes four competition categories:

• 10 km – the main distance for ambitious hobby runners
• 5 km – the intermediate distance for a broad hobby audience
• Pupil race – shorter distances for young people
• Children's race – very short distances for the youngest participants

Start on the Market Square

The start and finish are located on the Marktplatz Esens (Esens Market Square). The central location makes the event a town spectacle that residents and visitors can experience up close – the Esens town center becomes the stage for the run. The course typically runs through the historic town center and the adjacent urban area.

Early Evening Run Concept

A special feature of the Esenser Stadtlauf is its character as an early evening run. The starts are staggered from 6 PM to 9:30 PM – children run first, followed by pupil and main races later in the evening. This concept has two advantages: the high summer temperatures are more bearable in the evening, and the event becomes a festive summer evening spectacle with a town atmosphere.

Organizers and Sporting Roots

The run is supported by Lauftreff Schafhauser Wald e.V. in cooperation with Volksbank Esens eG. The running club provides the sporting expertise, while the bank provides the main financial sponsorship. This cooperation enables professional organization, timing, and award ceremonies.
