Wine in the Bergisches Land — an unusual combination
The Oberbergisches Land is known for its forests, its reservoirs, its low mountain climate — but not for its viticulture. This is precisely what makes the Weinfest Wipperfürth special: Here, the wine comes to the Bergisches Land, not the other way around. The organizer is Weingut & Brennerei KDM from Bernkastel-Wehlen on the Mosel, run by Kerstin and Detlef Müllers — who have been traveling to various German cities with their mobile wine presentation for years and successfully completed their first Wipperfürth appearance in 2025. 2026 marks the 2nd edition.
The Venue — historic market square
Wipperfürth is one of the oldest cities in the Bergisches Land. Its town charter dates back to 1217, making it the oldest city in the region. It was also a member of the Hanseatic League — hence the nickname "Hanseatic City". The market square, with its historic half-timbered houses and the St. Nicholas parish church, provides the atmospheric setting for the wine festival. For three days, the square becomes an oversized open-air wine tasting.
What's on offer for tasting
Weingut KDM presents a selection from German growing regions in Wipperfürth — the focus is naturally on the Mosel, as KDM is based there. Expected are:
- Riesling in dry and off-dry styles
- Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) — the growing German red wine classic
- Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder
- Cuvées and individual specialties
- Brandies and liqueurs from their own distillery (pomace brandy, Williams pear brandy, apricot liqueur)
Culinary Accompaniments
Local Wipperfürth restaurateurs set up stalls with matching dishes — Flammkuchen, cheese platters, antipasti, tapas, bratwurst, and sweets. The selection is coordinated with the wine: light starters, savory snacks, classic Bergisch-Westphalian home cooking.
Program and Sunday Shopping
Spread over the three days: live music on a small stage (jazz, singer-songwriter, regional bands), wine talks, and tasting sessions at the stalls. On Sunday, June 14th, there will be Sunday shopping — city center shops will be open, and the wine festival will merge with a city experience. Parents with children will find a pleasant atmosphere here.
Why it's worth a visit
The Wipperfürth Wine Festival is not huge — and that's exactly what makes it attractive. No mass tourism, no stereotypical image, but a small, personal event with direct contact with winemakers and distillers. Anyone interested in wine and who prefers to buy it in direct conversation with the producers rather than in the supermarket will find the right opportunity at Wipperfürth's market square.
