Guided wine hike along the WeinErlebnisPfad with wine stations and views of the Rhine Valley towards the Odenwald and Taunus.
Guntersblum is a market town in the Mainz-Bingen district with around 4,000 inhabitants, situated directly on the Rhine between Mainz and Worms. Its location on the Rhine riverbank and in the surrounding vineyards makes Guntersblum one of the most beautiful wine villages in Rhenish Hesse. The WeinErlebnisPfad is a permanently marked hiking trail through the Guntersblum vineyards, accessible year-round – but once a year, it transforms into a grand wine hike with wine service.
The approximately 8-kilometer route is moderately challenging and can be comfortably completed in about 3 to 5 hours, including breaks at the wine stations. The path leads through various sections of the Guntersblum vineyards: the steep slopes on the Rhine hillside, the gentle hills in the hinterland, through hollow paths, and past historic vineyard houses, the characteristic 'Trullos' of the region. Several viewpoints offer expansive views of the Rhine Valley, and on clear days, towards the Odenwald across the Rhine and the Taunus to the north.
At about eight to ten wine stations, Guntersblum vintners serve their own wines: Riesling, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, and Rosé. Additionally, food is available – from bratwurst to 'Spundekäs' (a cheese spread), cheese platters, and Rhenish Hessian specialties. Those who complete the entire route will pass every station and can sample the spectrum of Guntersblum wines. It is advisable to purchase a glass at the start and use it at all stations.
The choice of Ascension Day (May 14, 2026) as the date is no coincidence: the public holiday usually falls in a warm, pleasant spring week, is a legal holiday, making it easily accessible for all hiking enthusiasts, and has established a tradition as a hiking day in many regions of Germany. In Guntersblum, it becomes a Wine Hiking Day, marking a fixed date in the spring calendar for Rhenish Hessian wine tourists.
