Advent festival of the Laubenheimer clubs on the 1st Advent in the historic wine village on the Rhine
Laubenheim, with its nearly 8,000 inhabitants, is one of Mainz's most traditional districts. Located directly on the Rhine, shaped by viticulture on the slopes of Laubenheimer Berg and the historic winegrower courtyards along the main street, the district preserves its village character. The Laubenheimer Weihnachtsmarkt on the first Sunday of Advent is an expression of this independent identity: a deliberately small, club-supported market that is entirely dedicated to neighborhood, volunteerism, and Rhenish-Hessian conviviality.
Wooden stalls, decorated fir trees, and fairy lights line the area around the market square and along the central streets. The Laubenheim winegrower families serve mulled wine made from their own wines – a special feature that sets the Laubenheim market apart among Mainz's district markets. The catering at the other stalls is shared by the fire brigade, sports clubs, church communities, and carnival clubs: bratwurst, potato pancakes, Kreppel (doughnuts), homemade soups, coffee, and cake. Stalls offering handmade items, Advent arrangements, candles, honey, and gift ideas complete the offerings.
The stage program shapes the atmosphere of a classic Rhenish-Hessian Advent market. The men's choir, the brass band of the Protestant parish, the children's choirs from the primary schools, and the music associations provide atmospheric performances throughout the afternoon. The highlight for families is the visit of St. Nicholas in the late afternoon, who distributes gifts to the children. As darkness falls early, light arches, candles, and the sound of Christmas carols take over the staging of the village center.
The proceeds from the market go towards youth and club work in Laubenheim. Visitors often combine their visit to the market with a walk along the Rhine embankment and a view of the Laubenheim vineyards – one of the most beautiful views of the Rhine and the Rhenish-Hessian wine landscape. The Laubenheimer Weihnachtsmarkt is a reliable start to the Advent season and an invitation to get to know Mainz from its village-like district side.
