Industry meeting for film music with gala concert and presentation of the German Film Music Award
Since 2008, the Filmmusiktage Sachsen-Anhalt has been the industry meeting for film music in Germany — no other event brings together composers, orchestras, sound engineers, directors, and film students with such density. The host is the Handel city of Halle (Saale), and the Filmmusiktage are organized by the International Academy of Media and Arts (IAMA) in cooperation with the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the Staatskapelle Halle, and international partners such as the Berklee College of Music.
Unlike pure film festivals, the Filmmusiktage focus on the soundtrack. There is a congress with industry panels, masterclasses on orchestration and composition, workshops for young talent, silent film concerts with live orchestra, and the grand gala concert in the Halle Opera House, where the Staatskapelle Halle performs the nominated works. The highlight is the presentation of the Deutscher Filmmusikpreis (German Film Music Award) — one of the most prestigious awards in the German film industry.
The 19th edition will take place from October 31 to November 8, 2026. The motto will be announced in the summer of 2026; the 18th edition in 2025 was under the motto “MOMENTUM” and dealt with the upheaval in the film music industry caused by artificial intelligence and new technologies.
Halle is not the venue by chance. With the Opera House, the Steintor-Varieté, and Burg Giebichenstein, the city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt has sufficient venues within walking distance. The Staatskapelle Halle, one of Germany's oldest orchestras, is a regular guest at the Filmmusiktage. And last but not least: Halle is the birthplace of Georg Friedrich Handel — a city of music through and through.
The 19th edition of the Filmmusiktage follows the established structure: the first days are dedicated to the congress and workshops, mid-week to masterclasses and special screenings, and the weekend to the gala concert and awards ceremony. The complete program will be gradually published on filmmusiktage.de starting in summer 2026.
The final daily and artist program will be announced from August 2026.
Take the ICE directly to Halle (Saale) Hauptbahnhof (approx. 70 min from Berlin, 15 min from Leipzig). A five-minute walk from the station to the Opera House.
Gala concert and Film Music Award ceremony require tickets (Bühnen Halle), congress with day pass or festival pass. Student and industry discounts available.
The main venue is the Opernhaus Halle (Universitätsring 24). Other venues: Staatstheater Halle, Stadthaus, Kino Puschkino.
Halle offers numerous hotels near the train station and the old town. Capacity is usually good in November, but booking in advance is recommended.
