Women's Rights in the Mirror of International Cinema
The Filmfest FrauenWelten is Germany's most important festival with a dedicated focus on women's rights and gender equality in international film. Organized since 2001 by the women's rights organization TERRE DES FEMMES, the festival seeks out films that rarely make it into regular German theatrical releases – films from Afghanistan, Iran, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, the post-Soviet space, sometimes by female filmmakers whose works are too politically charged or commercially challenging.
From November 18 to 24, 2026, the festival will run – once again – at the cinema in the KulturBrauerei, Schönhauser Allee 36, in the Prenzlauer Berg district (Pankow borough). Around 30 international films are programmed, many with subsequent discussions with filmmakers, activists, and experts. For its anniversary, the festival announces a special supporting program that combines the festival's eventful history with current feminist perspectives.
FrauenWelten is never just a film program. Every screening that warrants a political or thematic discussion is complemented by a talk – featuring female filmmakers, activists from affected countries, lawyers, and experts on gender equality on stage. This makes the festival a space for discourse, far beyond just watching films.
The cinema in the KulturBrauerei is located in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, two minutes from the U2 Eberswalder Straße subway station. The KulturBrauerei itself, a former 19th-century brewery complex, is now a vibrant cultural and event hub with other venues – ideal for cinema days with a break at the adjacent bar. Berlin, State of Berlin.
Format as in previous years: daily screenings starting in the afternoon, several films per day, post-screening discussions after most showings. Tickets available from October 2026 online and at the cinema box office. The full program will be published from October 2026 at filmfest-frauenwelten.de.
