District festival of Äußere Neustadt, successor to the BRN — June 19-21, 2026 at Martin-Luther-Platz
The Äußere Neustadt is Dresden's most vibrant alternative district: Wilhelminian-era buildings, pubs, galleries, students, artists, long-term residents. Between 1990 and 2019, the "Bunte Republik Neustadt" (BRN) took place here annually — a three-day street festival that grew from a neighborhood experiment during the post-reunification years into a major event attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over Saxony and beyond. The BRN ended in 2019 — due to economic problems, conflicts between resident interests and commercial aspects, and safety regulations — leaving a void. It is precisely this void that the "Bunter Sommer Neustadt" has been filling since 2025: deliberately smaller, deliberately neighborly, deliberately non-commercial.
Synthēse e.V. is not a festival organizer in the traditional sense. The association sees itself as an alliance of Neustadt initiatives, businesses, artists, and residents who organize the festival together. All helpers work on a voluntary basis, without pay. The festival is financed by donations, small sponsorship contributions from local businesses, and voluntary contributions from visitors. The result is a festival with a distinctly different character than the BRN: quieter, more intimate, with less mass crowds, but with a lively neighborhood feeling — preserving precisely the element that defined the BRN in its early days.
The festival grounds are concentrated around Martin-Luther-Platz and the surrounding streets of the Äußere Neustadt. Five stages — larger ones for bands, smaller ones for DJ sets, reading stages, performance stations. In addition, residents open their backyards for concerts, readings, workshops, or private bars. Local businesses and restaurateurs operate stalls, and initiatives and associations provide information about their work (tenant movements, social projects, ecological initiatives). Free admission to everything, donations welcome.
The festival weekend runs with clear stage times: Friday, June 19, from 6 PM (opening) to 11:30 PM, Saturday, June 20, from 11 AM to 11:30 PM, Sunday, June 21, from 11 AM to 10 PM. Anyone from Neustadt or any guest can participate — by volunteering as a helper, setting up their own stalls, or opening their backyards. Performances on the official stages were limited by the registration deadline in 2026.
The BSN 2026 continues the concept of the premiere edition in 2025: a non-commercial district festival organized by residents for residents in the Äußere Neustadt. Synthēse e.V., the volunteer-run support association, has concentrated the festival grounds, as in 2025, on Martin-Luther-Platz and its immediate surroundings — deliberately compact to preserve the atmosphere of a neighborhood festival.
Five stages are spread across the festival grounds, offering space for regional bands, DJ sets, reading stages, and performance stations. In parallel, residents open their backyards for smaller concerts, workshops, or private bars — these backyard program points are often only known by word-of-mouth and are among the most delightful discoveries of the festival. Initiatives and associations from Neustadt provide information about social, ecological, and cultural projects. Applications for performances on the official stages were closed by the registration deadline in 2026.
