Open-Air Festival for Art, Culture, and Education
Palais Sommer is one of Germany's most unusual festival formats: For more than two months of summer, a continuous open-air program runs at two very different venues in Dresden. First, the Neumarkt in the historic center, with the Frauenkirche as its backdrop — a tourist hotspot and the festival's starting point. Then, from the end of July, the Alaunpark in Äußere Neustadt — Dresden's cultural and subcultural heart, a green oasis among the Wilhelminian-era buildings.
The concept is the program: Free access to art, culture, and education. Free admission to all events, a culture of donations instead of tickets, and volunteer work as the backbone. Over 200 events are organized each summer: live concerts spanning classical, jazz, indie, and world music, yoga and meditation sessions, readings, film screenings, discussion formats, and performances. Comuneo, the supporting association, seeks contributors and participants all year round.
Neumarkt Phase (June 20 — July 26, 2026): Against the backdrop of the Frauenkirche, in the heart of the baroque Old Town. Concerts and yoga in the mornings, readings and musical highlights in the evenings. Predominantly tourist audience.
Alaunpark Phase (July 27 — August 30, 2026): In the green park of Äußere Neustadt, surrounded by cafés, late-night shops, and residential areas. The concept is slightly more alternative, the audience more local, and the program more experimental. The stage in the park becomes the focal point of Dresden's subcultural summer scene.
Free admission at Palais Sommer is not just a slogan: Membership in Comuneo, donations, and the volunteer commitment of many helpers sustain the festival. Those who attend regularly can become members or volunteer — this is part of the concept. Thus, Palais Sommer is one of the most significant contributions to cultural participation in Saxony.
Dresden in summer: The Frauenkirche, the Zwinger, the Großer Garten — and Palais Sommer as the major, accessible cultural offering. Anyone planning a summer in Dresden should consult the Palais Sommer calendar beforehand — the program is so dense that every day offers multiple event options.
Phase 1 (Neumarkt, June 20 — July 26): Live concerts, yoga sessions, readings against the backdrop of the Frauenkirche. Phase 2 (Alaunpark, July 27 — August 30): The program shifts to the green park of Äußere Neustadt with a more experimental profile. Highlight on June 21: Fête de la musique with riKa and Les Os, Street Jazz Night with Dresden All Stars, World Yoga Day.
