About Schaubudensommer

Schaubudensommer Dresden is one of Germany's most unusual street art festivals. From July 7 to 9, 2026, the Schaubudensommer collective will transform the Hauptstraße in Innere Neustadt — between Albertplatz and the Golden Rider — into a colourful stage for three days, featuring acrobatics, performance, theatre, circus arts, and unusual everyday curiosities. Street artists from Dresden, all of Germany, and Europe will perform for free, and the audience moves between the various locations. In the spirit of a Wednesday-to-Thursday festival, the event attracts an extraordinary audience of tourists, commuters, and locals during the middle of the working week.

Street Art on Dresden's Hauptstraße

The Hauptstraße connects the historic Innere Neustadt with the Augustus Bridge and the Altstadt (Old Town) — and is one of Dresden's most beautiful promenades. The avenue, lined with trees, old bourgeois houses, and the striking equestrian monument of Augustus the Strong, runs between Albertplatz and the Golden Rider. For three days a year, Schaubudensommer transforms this promenade into a stage: wooden stalls, small grandstands, tents, and simply placed performance spots are spread along the avenue, and the street becomes the festival.

Performance, Acrobatics, and Everyday Curiosities

The festival is not a classic theatre or music festival. The programme primarily features performative formats: acrobatics, juggling, stilt walking, slapstick, short plays, performances, dance, musical performances, and "everyday curiosities" — actions that make the familiar strange. The Schaubudensommer collective explicitly invites street artists from various genres from Dresden, Germany, and Europe to perform on the Hauptstraße for three days. This international selection has been the festival's hallmark for years.

In the Middle of the Working Week

A special feature of Schaubudensommer: the festival usually takes place in the middle of the week — Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This creates a very different atmosphere than weekend festivals: commuters heading home from Albertplatz after work stumble upon a performance without prior planning; tourists walking along Hauptstraße unexpectedly find themselves in the midst of the festival; locals make it their evening stroll route. The festival is therefore "an intervention in the everyday life of the city," as the collective itself puts it.

Free and Accessible

Schaubudensommer has been free of charge since its first edition. Donations are part of the performance culture but are voluntary — put your hat out, take your hat in, whatever comes, comes. This accessibility is central: the festival aims to reach not only the culturally interested audience but everyone who happens to end up on Hauptstraße. Families with children are explicitly welcome, and many performances are designed to be child-friendly.

Dresden Neustadt — The City's Cultural Hub

The Neustadt is Dresden's most culturally diverse district and is centrally located in the capital of Saxony. With the Societätstheater, Scheune (cultural centre), numerous bars, and clubs, the Neustadt shapes the city's off-scene. Schaubudensommer is one of the most important festivals in this district — alongside the Bunter Sommer Neustadt in June and the BRN heritage. Those arriving for the festival can explore the district during breaks between performances — the Äußere Neustadt with Alaunpark, Louisenstraße, and Görlitzer Straße is just a few minutes away.

Schaubudensommer — edition 2026

From July 7 to 9, 2026, the Schaubudensommer collective transforms the Hauptstraße in Dresden's Innere Neustadt into a stage for international street art. Acrobatics, juggling, performance, theatre, and everyday curiosities — three days of programming during the working week, free for the audience.

International Street Art in Innere Neustadt

In 2026, Schaubudensommer once again turns the Hauptstraße into a three-day festival stage. Wooden stalls, small grandstands, and performance spots are spread from Albertplatz to the Golden Rider. International street artists from Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Great Britain, and Eastern European countries will perform in multiple sessions per day.
