Three days of non-commercial art and culture festival in Dresden's Neustadt — 19 venues, concerts, exhibitions, readings, and workshops from September 23 to 25, 2026
Dresden's Äußere Neustadt — the district between Bautzner Straße, Königsbrücker Straße, and Albertplatz, one of Germany's largest Wilhelminian-era ensemble buildings — has been the alternative heart of the Saxon state capital since the 1990s. From September 23 to 25, 2026, the Neustadt Art Festival celebrates its 13th edition, turning the district into a large open workshop for three days. The festival is non-commercial, organized on a voluntary basis by the Neustadt Art Kollektiv, and largely accessible free of charge.
The program is spread across 19 venues: the Kunsthof Dresden with its 'Courtyards of Metamorphosis' (Courtyard of Animals, Courtyard of Light, Courtyard of Elements, etc.) forms the atmospheric center; other main venues include the Scheune, the Kunsthaus Dresden, the KulturCentrale, the Societaetstheater, the Projekttheater, the Kraftwerk Mitte, and numerous smaller galleries, studios, and pub courtyards. Visitors receive a festival booklet with a map and program — the walk from venue to venue is part of the experience.
The festival combines several disciplines equally: visual arts (exhibitions by young Dresden artists, installations, performances, open studios), music (concerts with indie, jazz, electronic, and classical music), literature (readings, poetry slams, talks with authors), discussions (district issues, cultural policy, social questions), workshops (printmaking, screen printing, comics, dance), and city walks with architectural historians.
The festival originated in 2014 from an initiative by Neustadt artists who wanted to counter the increasing gentrification of the district with a cultural platform. Today, it is one of the most important festivals in Dresden's alternative scene, attracting thousands of visitors annually. It is deliberately held on the last weekend of September — when the summer program of major festivals concludes and the Neustadt pubs wind down their inner courtyard season.
The 13th edition of the Neustadt Art Festival runs from Wednesday, September 23, to Friday, September 25, 2026, in Dresden's Äußere Neustadt. 19 venues are spread across the district; a printed festival booklet with a map and program guides visitors through the weekend.
