Kölner Lichter — Cologne's Biggest Open-Air Spectacle
Kölner Lichter is one of the largest and most famous fireworks displays in Germany. Initiated in 2001 (1st edition) as a music-synced fireworks show on the Rhine, it has been Cologne's biggest summer event for 25 years — and is as much a part of the city's brand DNA as the Cathedral, Carnival, or Kölsch beer. Every year, hundreds of thousands gather on both banks of the Rhine, on rooftops, bridges, ships, and grandstands.
21st Edition 2026 — „The Magical School of Fireworks"
The 2026 theme is „The Magical School of Fireworks". It is the 21st edition of the spectacle. A double occasion for celebration: Both KD (Köln-Düsseldorfer Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt) and Sparkasse KölnBonn are celebrating their 200th anniversaries in 2026. Main sponsors besides Sparkasse KölnBonn: RheinEnergie; the organizer is OSMAB Holding AG.
Schedule — From 3 PM to the Fireworks Night
The festival day begins as early as 3:00 PM: Food and drink stands open on both banks of the Rhine. Arrival before 7 PM is recommended, as crowds and road closures will cause delays afterward. The 91st Stadtachter — the traditional rowing race between Rodenkirchen and the city center — starts at 8:45 PM. From 7:30 PM, a convoy of ships with about 25 passenger ships will sail; they depart from Porz towards Cologne city center, accompanied by a constantly firing fire ship.
10:00 PM — Sea of Smartphone Lights
At 10:00 PM, the ship convoy passes the city center. Organizers are calling on spectators to hold up their smartphone lights — creating a continuous sea of small lights along the Rhine. A moderated countdown accompanies the event. From 10:15 PM, WDR broadcasts live on television.
11:00 PM — The Music-Synced Fireworks Display
The absolute highlight: At precisely 11:00 PM, two 120-meter-long ships in the middle of the Rhine launch the music-synced fireworks. Approximately 30 minutes long, choreographed to specially composed music, which is broadcast synchronously via loudspeakers along the bank and in the WDR stream. Thousands of effects, heights up to 200 meters — a work of art of light and sound, ranking among the most sophisticated pyromusical productions in Germany.
Best Viewing Spots and Grandstands
Best views: the Rheinterrassen in Deutz, the Sparkassen-Tribüne (ticketed), KölnSKY (hotel observation deck), and the Kölner Seilbahn (cable car). Ship spots on KD, KölnTourist, Bonner Personenschiffahrt ships are available for advance booking — popular, early booking recommended. Those without tickets can find free views on the Deutz Rhine bank, in the Rheinauen park, and on the surrounding bridges (Hohenzollernbrücke, Deutzer Brücke).
