International Christmas Market in the Monastery Courtyard with Arrival of Santa Clauses on the Saale River
The Klosterweihnacht in Bernburg (Saale) is no ordinary Advent event. Organized by Hochschule Anhalt, whose Bernburg campus fosters a distinctly international student body, the Klosterweihnacht is a living testament to cultural diversity. In the historic monastery courtyard, behind the venerable walls of the Bernburg Monastery, Christmas traditions from various countries meet.
The most unusual element of the festival: On Saturday at precisely 12:30 PM, Santa Clauses and fairy tale characters from all over the world arrive in decorated boats on the banks of the Saale River. Accompanied by music and trumpets, they proceed in a solemn procession across the Altmarkt to the monastery, where the festival is officially opened. The boat reception is considered the event's secret hallmark — it transforms the typical Christmas market into a small theatrical event.
Over the two festival days, there will be live music, dance performances, theater presentations, and cultural contributions from international students. A craft and farmers' market sells locally produced goods alongside international art and crafts. The food ranges from Thuringian bratwurst to Colombian empanadas, from mulled wine to masala chai. There are special programs for children — gifts from Santa Claus, craft activities, games, and dance offerings.
Bernburg is located in the Salzlandkreis district in Saxony-Anhalt — a venerable residential city on the banks of the Saale River, characterized by Bernburg Castle, the expansive Saale promenade, and the historic monastery quarter. Visitors to the Klosterweihnacht can combine their day with a walk along the Saale, a visit to the Schlossberg (Castle Hill), or the nearby Bärenzwinger (Bear Enclosure). In clear winter air, the small town reveals a special charm.
The 2026 Klosterweihnacht runs on Saturday, December 12th, and Sunday, December 13th, in the Bernburg Monastery Courtyard. The opening traditionally features the Santa Claus boat reception on the Saale River at 12:30 PM — a magical sight that attracts numerous spectators each year. This is followed by a festival procession, an official welcome, and the start of the program in the monastery courtyard.
The exact artist and stage program will be published by Hochschule Anhalt in November 2026.
