Traditional festival since 1968 — Karlsplatz, Lindenstraße, Reineplatz
The Bernburg City and Rose Festival is more than just an ordinary city festival: since 1968, it has been an integral part of the urban identity of Bernburg (Saale). Back then, a local doctor initiated a rose planting campaign to beautify the gray industrial city. What began as a municipal gardening initiative grew into a three-day folk tradition that shapes the city's self-image.
The festival core is spread across three central Bernburg squares: Karlsplatz hosts the main stage and the festival tent area, Lindenstraße is where the market activities take place (antique and flea market, arts and crafts), and Reineplatz features the funfair with carousels and rides. The program points are spread across the three festival days, from the children's and family day (often on Saturday) to sports competitions with the Salzlandkreis district sports association, from the parade on Sunday afternoon to the grand fireworks display as the final highlight.
What sets the festival apart from comparable city festivals is the rose as its central symbol. As the name suggests, it's not just decorative: rose exhibitions, a rose market with local nurseries, a Rose King and Queen couple parading through the festival grounds, and continuous rose decorations of the central squares make the thematic focus visible. This is the emotional connection: the rose and Bernburg belong together.
Bernburg is located in the Salzlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt — a traditional Saale town with Bernburg Castle, the extensive Saale promenade, and an unusually well-preserved historic city center. Visitors to the Rose Festival should plan at least half a day for the city itself — the castle, the Bärenzwinger (bear enclosure), and the Saale riverbank offer a charming complementary program.
Classic three-day city festival format: Opening on Friday, main day on Saturday with children's and family day, parade, and grand fireworks display to conclude on Sunday. Organized by the City of Bernburg in cooperation with the Salzlandkreis district sports association and local clubs.
The final program will be published by the City of Bernburg in spring 2026.
