Kite festival on the North Sea beach for the whole family
When the wind blows across the Watt'n Insel, the Familienlagune Perlebucht in Büsum becomes the stage for one of the most beautiful spring festivals on the North Sea coast. Every April, the Büsum Kite Festival attracts kite enthusiasts from all over Northern Germany to the beach in the Dithmarschen district. Under the open sky and on wide sandy areas, you can experience for three days how countless kites in animal, mythical, and fantasy shapes populate the sky above the lagoon.
The centerpiece is the impressive large standing figures — kites up to ten meters long, hovering calmly in the wind over the beach. For the younger visitors, the kite ferry is the highlight: a specially constructed setup sends sweets and small gifts from Schmidt Spiele directly from the air onto the heads of the waiting crowd — a sight that guarantees children's laughter. Adults, in turn, can try their hand at an airy egg-catching competition.
For those who don't own a kite yet or whose own model is no longer flying, there's a kite shop on site. Snack stands provide fries, crêpes, and North Sea classics — and the beach of the Familienlagune is wide enough for extended walks between the flying fields. The festival is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission to the Familienlagune is free during the Kite Festival.
Büsum is one of the most famous seaside resorts on the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast, ideally combined with a mudflat hike or a visit to the Sturmflutenwelt experience center. The Kite Festival is considered one of the spring highlights of the Dithmarschen Tourism Association and is organized by the Tourismus Marketing Service Büsum.
The 2026 Kite Festival will once again bring kite fans from all over Northern Germany to Büsum. At the Familienlagune Perlebucht, large standing figures, stunt kites, and countless family models will rise into the North Sea sky over three days. A dedicated kite shop will be available for spontaneous purchases, and Beach Access 14 will serve as the central flying area. The organizer is Tourismus Marketing Service Büsum GmbH.
In case of extreme weather (storm or no wind), the program will be adjusted. Current information at buesum.de.
