About Kutterregatta

The Büsumer Kutterregatta is one of the oldest and largest maritime folk festivals on the German North Sea coast. For three days in mid-July, the crab cutters of the Büsum fishing fleet compete in a race off the dike, complemented by a traditional ship parade, SUP races, a harbor mile with culinary stands, and a stage program on two stages. A true harbor town tradition in the Dithmarschen district, freely accessible with a Büsum guest card. The 121st edition takes place in 2026.

Büsum — the North Sea spa town with a harbor

Büsum is a North Sea health resort and harbor town in the Dithmarschen district of Schleswig-Holstein, with a traditionally strong crab fishing fleet. The harbor island right in the town center is the stage for the Kutterregatta — a race that originally evolved from the competition among Büsum fishermen for the fastest crab cutters and developed into a three-day maritime folk festival.

Over a hundred years of tradition

The Kutterregatta has been running since the early 1900s — 2026 marks the 121st edition. This makes it one of the oldest maritime racing traditions on the German North Sea coast. It is more than a sporting event: it is part of Büsum's identity and the highlight of the summer calendar.

Program pillars

  • Cutter race — the actual regatta with crab cutters off the dike
  • Traditional ship parade — historic sailing ships and vessels parade through the harbor
  • SUP races — modern addition with stand-up paddleboard competitions
  • Harbor mile — culinary stands with crab sandwiches, fish, beer, cocktails
  • Stage program on two stages — maritime music, shanty choirs, pop
  • Music and dancing in the regatta tent

What you will experience

Three days on which Büsum audibly and visibly becomes a harbor town. The race of the crab cutters is a spectacle in itself: ships that normally go out to catch shrimp compete against each other under sail and motor. In between, there's the harbor mile, stages, dancing — and an audience consisting of Büsum residents, regular vacationers, and day-trippers from all over Dithmarschen and Northern Germany.

Kutterregatta — edition 2026

Free admission with Büsum guest card.

The 121st edition
